Early planning information is available for 2008 trips to Honduras to visit water projects underway and to participate in water filter installation.

Dates - May 3-10 or 4-11, 2008

Group leaders - Don & Nancy Crandall (Muskegon Rotary Club). Working with International Aid

Objectives for a spring trip to Honduras:

  • Working trip on health and humanitarian projects
  • Visiting water projects supported by Rotary District 6290
  • Exploring partnerships with Rotary clubs in Honduras and other NGOs

Tentative itinerary includes:

  • Flights to and from GR or Detroit (depending on price) and San Pedro Sula
  • Visit with Water For People in SPS
  • Work on building latrines in villages near La Union
  • Visits to villages to view water source projects and bio-sand filters
  • Visit to Copan ruins

Many of the villages around La Union are being supplied with community water systems, bio-sand filters and latrines through a partnership of Rotary clubs from District 6290, Rotary Clubs from Honduras and International Aid (IA). It is anticipated that most of these projects will be completed by the end of June 2008. IA has suggested that our group of 18 volunteers work on completing some of the projects by building latrines in three of the villages. We will have an opportunity to visit some of the communities with completed water source projects and bio-sand filters and hear how they have impacted the communities. We will also meet with Rotary club representatives and other NGOs to explore potential future projects that our Rotary Clubs might be interested in supporting.

Estimated cost per person:

  • Air fare - $650 - $700
  • In country cost (housing, food, etc.) - $550
  • Project cost (supplies, transportation, etc.) - $5000 for the group.

HHOP has voted to support this trip along with the potential of a District grant to cover the fixed cost ($5000). Local Rotary clubs will be asked to assist with the remainder of the costs to reduce the amount for each person.

As planning continues, details will be reported to you. This is an early reminder so you may begin planning for the trip.
