Dr Ismel Gonzales, Lakehead University on the English Language Center at Lakehead University with special focus on the ELC HOMESTAY PROGRAM for which he is director.

He detailed this innovative program matching international students with host families, citing an array of benefits for both. There are many benefits and considerable flexibility in timing, opportunities within and a full slate of services and resources. The club was interested to hear of this exciting program and certainly related to the benefits accruing in that our own club has for decades hosted international students in our own exchange program.
 


CLUB PRESENTATIONS 
  • Treasurer Kevin Holloway on the 2025 budget preparation process, the bottom line on our financial assets and dues for the upcoming year. Teaming up with President elect Hector Dougall a simple Rotary Finance input request sheet was disseminated, asking for new ideas and commentary applicable to the coming year including possible new projects.
  • Marg Woods on EARTH DAY (today), the 55th anniversary and its critical acknowledgement. A video produced by CBC Kids News was shown and provided a great overview of where we are at. A long way to go on a noble course for Rotarians and like minded ilk, but hopeful! (Marg also offered her own Vegan applesauce muffins as a treat today...well done Marg).
  • John Stephenson on the deputation to TB Council on adoption of green standards for building, with Marg Woods, last week. It was well received with  a pledge to work up a full feasibility study on funding/availability/.implementation etc by 2027. This was considered a good result. Bravo  John, Marg and the club for support on this important file..
  • P-EE Brent Boyko on the club being awarded a very special Sprit of Thunder Bay award and official reception at City Hall on April 15th. A plaque, medal and fine book was presented, the latter auctioned off for the club benefit by Brent.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • Dew Drop Inn service opportunity this coming Thursday April 24th, afternoon serving shift (Dave Silliman)
  • Fellowship meeting at Roosters April 15th at Roosters a big success with Dougall media thanked.
  • Birthdays for April. Bob Tomlinson as always a great job fêting members with appropriate humour too.
  • Trivia night this coming Saturday night at LU (contact Rotaract club)
  • Scotch tasting event (Lakehead Rotary club) May 22nd at Superior Inn.
