  President's Report

How gratifying to hear the latest update on End Polio Now programme thanks to PDG Bob Aitken. We often don’t hear how our “donations” have/are being utilised so it was great to have several amazing facts and figures revealed. Rotary’s thanks must go to Bill & Melinda Gates for matching every one of our dollar donations two fold. Knowing that Rotary and its partners are SO CLOSE to eliminating this disease, our Club will again exceed the suggested Club donation amount which will hopefully bring that “elimination” day closer to realisation.

Friday’s busy day commenced with a small team of members turning out for a very early start on a cold morning to cook breakfast for those participating in the fundraising Golf Day for Car # 1970 entered in the Variety Club Bash being held shortly. Well done Lindsay & Stewart for your efforts in raising outstanding amounts of funds for Variety Club over many years. Our Club is proud to support your fundraising, with great planning by Adam & Bruce.

A big “Thank You” to Satya & Archana for volunteering to host our Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea in the Afternoon and to Valda and her team of helpers for putting on a great afternoon which amazingly raised an outstanding total of $2030.00 which consisted of admission charge, raffle tickets & donations from those who couldn’t attend.

We extend our thoughts and prayers to Sheryn, and her family, at the passing of her Nanna.  Never an easy time but am sure there are many beautiful memories.

Your President Elect Frank will guide the Club for the 15th & 22nd May meeting while Cheryl, Zena & I do some caravanning in western NSW and Qld. See you all on the 29th!

Polio Plus Global Update

For those that missed the Presentation given last Monday evening by Bob Aitken referenced above by Norm you can go to the Springwood website and scroll down to the Download section on the left hand column or clock here: Polio Plus Global Update. A window will open in your browser allowing you to scroll through the presentation slides and see the statistics along with other insightful information and history.

If you did miss the evening I do suggest taking the time to see what has been and still needs to be accomplished to eradicate Polio.

Friday morning was the Variety Club Golf Day breakfast BBQ and, although chilly at 7 degrees C at 0715hrs, the day quickly warmed up to be perfect. The BBQ went down well under Adam’s careful and watchful eye and the Variety Club organisers were very happy and appreciative of the efforts of the Club. Well done everyone and the Club’s reputation has once again been enhanced by the cheerful and efficient service you all offered.

I was informed yesterday that our participation in the planned Mothers’ Day BBQ for the Faulconbridge P&C has been cancelled. Apparently the school canteen have taken it over so we have a free weekend.

The next event I have on my calendar is the DCafe on Tuesday 9 May followed by the monthly Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 20 May. I will leave it to Valda to report on the success of the Big Morning Tea in the Afternoon.

Cheers
Bruce

ROTARY FOUNDATION
CENTURION PROGRAMME

The Centurion program is a convenient way to make a personal contribution to our charity, The Rotary Foundation.

Most clubs make contributions to The Foundation from funds the clubs raise but the Centurion program is personal. The contribution of $A100 a year is voluntary. It is renewed annually by you but you can request regular deductions if you prefer.
The funds are paid to the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust, going to either Polio Plus or the Annual Fund at your discretion. Your contribution is recognised by the presentation of a personalised Certificate by your club each year.

A contribution of $A100 is not a major commitment for most people, but collectively it represents a major contribution to the Foundation. Your individual contribution counts towards a Paul Harris Fellowship and adds to your club’s Annual Giving total when you direct the funds to Annual Fund -Share Program. This program returns about 45% of your donation to our District as District Designated Funds for use in District and Global Grants, with the remainder supporting other Rotary Foundation efforts, such as Peace Fellows, Polio, and Programs of Scale.

Partners and friends of Rotarians are welcome to become Centurions and their support will be most welcome.

PERSONAL DONATIONS TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
They can be made to the Club which will then be remitted and your Tax Receipt will be forwarded directly to you.

To ensure your donation is received & receipted before end of financial year and the Club receives the appropriate recognition please deposit you contribution into the Clubs Community Account (BSB: 112-879  Account 09887 6456)  BY END OF MAY ,under advice to myself and Treasurer Bill.

ShelterBox Stories - No. 1

Ukraine - Vladyslav & Vlada

More than 15 million people have been displaced by the conflict in Ukraine. With around five million of them now living as refugees across Europe, fleeing to neighbouring countries like Moldova, Poland, Romania and beyond.
Vladyslav and Vladsylava are one of thousands of couples who fled to Moldova where ShelterBox worked to support people displaced by the conflict. In April 2022, they received ShelterBox cash assistance to help with the financial burden of being displaced. The ShelterBox team sat with them as they shared their story.
Before the war, "We lived as normal people. We walked out to the park and other things; home, work, studying. Everything was calm and quiet. We enjoyed living there. Life was good before the war. Then the bombing started. It became, of course, worse, so we had to leave our own home and move to Moldova to find a way out," said Vlad.
"We have only one hope that the war will end soon. But are hope is very small.  Our future plans are to go back to Ukraine. We hope that everything will be fine, people will stop dying, and that God will protect everyone."
