Another happy occasion for our members when Bunnings provided a BBQ for everyone, and a number of groups held stalls for families and young people. A band  played music duing the evening, and lots of events for children were provided.

What is it with Carols By The Lake and the weather. While I was not present at last year's event, but volunteered together with Bill and Adam to help put this event together in the absence of Johannes and our President Lix (both ill), I had been told on many occasions about the way the weather rolled in last year and made it very uncomfortable. This year turned out to be very similar. When we arrived at 3pm the weather was fine with a temperature of about 20 Deg C. Bill was waiting, Adam arrived with the BBQ trailer and together with Rachel and Jerome, and Roger B we quickly had the site set up. The remainder of the team arrived at 4pm and with Roger and Jerome plying the tongs and Adam as GOFOR we had our first sales shortly thereafter. Then it began to get chilly, a breeze sprang up, dark clouds rolled in and a light rain began - from then on the weather was somewhat miserable. By 5.30 the temperature had dropped to 13 Deg C and most of us were damp. Not that it dampened our spirits! 

 

The Carols were very entertaining and the public braving the elements were very grateful for our warm sausage sizzles and service. Marilyn and Rachel ran the money side of the service and Al, Mila, Josh and IPP Frank served our fare;  Geoffrey topped it all off with the sauces. I would like to thank Mila, Al's stepdaughter, for volunteering for her first taste of Rotary. She fitted in very well and toiled cheerfully at the servery throughout the entire event. Well done Mila and we hope to welcome you to future events.

 

While the weather put a bit of a dampener on the event and obviously kept a lot of families away, those who attended seemed to enjoy the event and, while the proceeds have not yet been totalled, we seem to have made a reasonable profit to be shared between our Club and the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Once again, a big thank you for a great team effort and a very convivial day despite the weather.

conducted with people who had left his club, the Rotary Club of Boise, Idaho, USA, he learned something interesting. Members didn’t necessarily know everything they could do as Rotarians. For example. click on the image below to view one of the videos.     3.  ROTARY OCEANIA MEDICAL AID FOR CHILDREN (ROMAC) NEWS -   REMEMBERING REX The 2012-13 ROMAC Annual Report featured an article on young Rex from Papua New Guinea who was treated that year in Adelaide for encephalocele, a neural tube birth defect where brain tissue protrudes in a sac through a defect in the newborn’s skull. This condition is usually treated surgically very early in life.   Rex and his mother Karen came from the Papua New Guinea Highlands, a 10-hour bus ride from the nearest town, and he was five years old before he came to ROMAC’s attention.   In his community, Rex’s facial deformity meant he was ostracised and would be unable to attend school. It was urgent for Rex to receive the care that would spare him the social rejection and resulting lasting psychosocial effects usually suffered by those with facial deformities.   Rex and Karen were supported by members of the Rotary Club of Henley Beach and hosted by Anthony Masson, who ably assisted Karen, who lived in an agrarian, non-monetary community, navigate the very different demands of city life.   Rex was operated on by Dr Mark Moore at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide. His recovery was swift and, naturally gregarious, he was soon taking full advantage of the activities laid on for him during his recovery.
