  President's Report

Well another full week of happenings.

The most important, is what I consider a great moment in a Clubs makings is the induction of new members. Thanks to Cheryl & Jenny it was my great pleasure to Induct Al, Satya & Archana into the wonderful world of Rotary and in particular The Rotary Club of Springwood. More good news is that Alana & Craig  have accepted the invitation to become Friends of the Club.

Congratulations to Geoffrey & his team for the successful first DCaf on Tuesday.

At last Board meeting the Board accepted Franks offer to carry on as President in 2024-2025 unless someone else is prepared to accept the position.

A successful first meeting to discuss placement of the two defibrillators in the community has been held and plans are under way. More information to follow shortly.

Good to hear that Valda & Archana have taken on the challenge to run a Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea event in May. Again, details soon.

Director Bruce says he has “just enough” to run the BBQ on election day, so if you haven’t but can assist, please see him.

It’s the time of the year when Centurion contributions are being called for so that we can remit during May. If you need more details feel free to contact me.

A reminder that Lynda will be accepting any A or B list notifications for 20th & 27th meetings and that Cheryl will be acting Secretary (when we get back) for the rest of this year.

Lastly, may I on behalf of the Club wish Paul & Suzanne safe & happy travels as they embark on their three month journey.

D Caf begins in Springwood

Commencing something new is always a bit daunting. One wonders whether will there be any takers, have we prepared enough etc?  So it was with much excitement for those of us who have been publishing the beginning of the Springwood Rotary D Caf project and attending the Katoomba D Caf that we had 18 people attend our first meeting.

The atmosphere was positive and people interacted with each other in a very friendly way. I began the session with asking Lucian Keegel, the District Person for the D Caf projects to give a brief summary about the origins of the project.

This was followed by a series of questions on ‘Getting to know you’ where people introduced themselves and told a little about their background causing much interest and laughter.

A quiz of 12 questions which tested the historical and general knowledge of those present.

Getting everyone to their feet for some simple exercises and an unexpected sing song was enjoyed by all.

Giving people the opportunity to talk revealed how most of them had found it difficult to get the help to understand what the future held for the person with dementia and the carers. For those who had been to a D Caf support group or other community group found that they were the most beneficial. So as Rotarians we are meeting real need for our community.

My thanks to Valda, Bronwyn, Lynda and Nelly who interacted with everyone and made the morning such a success. Lynda brought 4 small pot plants to give out and as there were 3 couple present they each received one and a single lady whose friend had just been diagnosed with dementia received the other one.

All in all, it was a great beginning and those present plan to come again.

Geoffrey

Election Sausage Sizzle

As I have mentioned at our previous meetings and in the Springword, on election day, SAT 25 MAR, we will be running a BBQ for Ellison PS P and C at the school which is a Polling Centre. The Club did a similar BBQ last year and it was reported to be a very busy day with about 500 sausages cooked. This one promises to be the same.

While there are still some details to be finalised I anticipate we will begin service at about 8am and conclude at about 2pm. Being a rather lengthy day I would like as many volunteers as possible so we can run at least two shifts. Request you look at your calendar and let me know if you are available. If you do have restrictions due to other commitments but can assist for a few hours in the morning or around the lunch period please also let me know.

Looking forward to a good roll-up of the Club members for this one.

Cheers
Bruce
