MISSISSAUGA-WEST

A Brief Review

The Rotary Club of Mississauga-West has a long history of service to the community in the broadest sense. Founded in 1965, it has undertaken and supported by donation and manpower, many community, vocational, and international projects. Our membership consists of over 40 men and women from local businesses and professions dedicated to the Rotary motto of "Service above self".

Recognizing that the future of our community is dependent on the youth of today, the Club sponsors and actively participates in, Camp Enterprise, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards seminars, Adventures in Citizenship week in Ottawa, the Youth Employment Service of the "Y". Members of the club were instrumental in the founding of The Peel Regional Science Fair and Junior Achievement in Peel, both of which remain as beneficiaries of the clubs financial disbursements. Through the Erindale Campus of UTM, we have funded a cash bursary of $500 in Psychology, a $1,500 Peel Regional Science Fair and 2 or 3 $3,000 Rotary Service Above Self Bursaries, awarded annually. In addition, we participate in the international Youth Exchange program, a full year's stay in another country, to learn and experience its culture, customs and language. Area students have gone to Japan, Germany, Mexico, Peru and many other nations, while incoming students have come from a similarly long list of countries.

The club supports a Youth Outreach Program, a Breakfast club that provides meals before the start of the school day, Community Living, the Salvation Army, Hospice of Peel, the Cancer Society, the Credit Valley Hospital and many other local charities.

On the international front, it has helped build wells, provided equipment for hospitals and supplied wheelchairs to underdeveloped countries.

Approximately $75,000 is raised by Club members annually from various fund raising projects, and is returned to the community through donations to many worthy and needy organizations, individuals and causes. One of the more popular and long-standing programs is our Travelogue Series of professionally narrated travel movies at Port Credit Secondary School that began in 1966.

Members of the Rotary Club of Mississauga West encompass a wide range of occupations and interests, from forensic science to newspaper publishing. Other occupations among the membership include the manufacture of locks for jails, hospital management, residential construction and sales and many more. The club is considered one of the most dynamic in the region and has made many of its members available to serve in senior roles within Rotary.

We meet Tuesday evenings at the Faculty Club of UTM where we enjoy fellowship, plan future projects that benefit youth, the elderly and the less fortunate, the community as a whole and promote international goodwill and understanding. Our meetings feature informative guest speakers, plant tours and regular social events to nurture fellowship and opportunities for service.
