End Polio Now - Eradication is not only possible, its probable.

Polio (short for poliomyelitis, once called infantile paralysis), used to strike thousands of children in Canada each year, resulting in permanent, life long physical disability or death. In 1955, it was announced that the Salk vaccine was safe and effective against this disabling, sometimes fatal infection. Due to the Salk vaccine, and soon afterward the Sabin oral vaccine, both developed with March of Dimes funding, wild (not vaccine-associated) polio infections have been eliminated from Canada for nearly 3 decades.

In 1985, Rotary International took up the cause of Polio Eradication from the March of Dimes and focused their mission on total global eradication of the disease. Since the launch of Rotary International and global Rotary Clubs Polio Eradication vaccination Initiative, global verified cases of Polio have dropped from 350,000 cases per year in 125 countries - to fewer than 40 in only three countries in 2016. In 2017 - we are seeing even fewer verified cases reported monthly. We are 99.9% of the way to our goal - Total eradication of Polio globally, Forever.

The Rotary Club of Yorkton is proud of their enduring commitment to this initiative, and is extremely thankful for the contributions of our partners in this effort.

The Government of Canada - who in 2013 committed C$250,000,000 for Polio Eradication world-wide, of which C$12,000,000 was designated to match contributions made through or by Canadian Rotary Clubs.  This fund has been fully utilized.

Global project partners - who joined in our efforts in 1988. These include the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, UNICEF (and more recently the Gates Foundation). Together we created the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

Yorkton Citizens, like you - who just last year, supported our local efforts to raise funds for Polio Eradication.  Leveraging locally raised funds, Rotary District 5550 and Rotary International Polio eradication initiative matching grants, matching grants from the Government of Canada Polio Eradication / Rotary partnership fund, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Polio Eradication matching grants initiative, Yorkton and our Club raised over C$13,000 for global Polio Eradication efforts, over three evenings.

For that - we thank YOU.
