Dr. John Toussaint, introduced by Karen Scott, spoke about prostate cancer and HPCA (Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance). John has a psychological/ counselling background.
HPCA, a charity, is a no-fee counselling service to raise awareness of prostate cancer
and encourage early detection (eg “Little Prick” media campaign). HPCA is located at cnr Turton Rd and Station St, Waratah (the old Waratah Post Office building).
John presented statistics on prostate cancer (high incidence in Australia and the Hunter), and a description/ picture of the prostate gland. He spoke of symptoms of prostate problems, risk factors (including age, family history, and lifestyle/ diet and environmental factors), and treatment options. He spoke of the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test and DRE (Digital Rectal Examination).
The counselling and information service provided gets some funding from Hunter New England Health, but relies as well on fundraising activities and other assistance. HPCA has some referral processes with GPs and urologists.
Dr. Toussaint provided some pens and information brochures. He was thanked by Chris McGrath for his informative talk. Chris presented him with a copy of the Rotary Down Under booklet “Humanity in Motion”.
