The 2017 Ocean Swimarathon is history. This year was organized around Flashmob on social media due to uncertain weather. Forty participants, all experienced ocean swimmers launched during rainy, windy conditions to raise money for Polio Plus and Channel swimmer Anne Cleveland who is diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas. A total of $2200 was raised today and more Donations are arriving at the Youcaring Website www.youcaring.com/annecleveland.
La Jolla Sunrise Rotary partnered with La Cove Swim Club to support Anne. Hot towels, muffins, donuts and hot coffee/coco warmed chilly swimmers. La Jolla Sunrise Rotary conducted the first Ocean Swimarathon in 2011 helping establish the first of two Guinness World Records. This year's Flashmob may well be another first for La Jolla Sunrise Rotary .

Participating in San Diego's 2016 annual count and interviews of homeless people ranks near the top of most memorable and thought-provoking highlights of my year.   Once again I encourage all fellow Rotarians to seriously consider registering to participate in the 2017 WeAllCount Point-in-Time count or interviews.

Every week Trip Bennet and Oliver W. Jones lead us in our morning song. They put together a lyric sheet just in case we do not know the words and they really brighten up our mornings! Trip strums his guitar while we sing and Oliver provides us with the song’s history through an entertaining and educational short story. This week Trip and Oliver lead us in the song “House of the Rising Sun” in honor of Trip’s mother who recently passed. The La Jolla Sunrise Rotary is fortunate to have Trip and Oliver as members. Click "Read more" to watch the video of our song.

Through Gift of Life, Rotary Clubs worldwide are helping to save the lives of indigent children with congential heart defects by enabling them to receive needed heart surgery. To date, Gift of Life has provided funding for more than 15,000 children and hopes to do the same for at least another 3,000 kids every year. Several clubs in our district have formed the "Gift of Life 5340 Foundation" in order to help sponsor children for heart surgery. One hundred and ten (110) children have already been sponsored by the Foundation.
