President Tony presented information on the Rotary Four Way Test of the things that we think, say and do… Developed in 1932 by Herbert Taylor and adopted by Rotary in 1943, the test challenges us to think the following before we act or speak:

 

    1    Is it the truth?

    2    Is it fair to all concerned?

    3    Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

    4    Will it be beneficial to all concerned

John Boyce thanked club members for prayers and support upon his mother’s passing and Donna’s hospitalization.

 

Gloria Leffler informed club members that Averill McCullough had been in a car accident and is recovering.

 

Program:

 

Brian Murphy introduced Leisa Tilley-Grajek and Chuck Daniels from K9 Guardians.

 

K9 Guardians trains dogs to support veterans with PTSD. Leisa stated that an average of 22 veterans take their own lives each day. Much of their distress can be alleviated through the help of these highly trained K9s. The veterans are able to both receive support from their animals as well as gain a focus outside of their problems because they have to provide care, training and support for their dogs.

 

K9 Guardians has raised over 100 pups, placing them with deserving veterans. The cost for training and raising a pup ranges between $15,000 to $50,000 per animal depending on time and training needs. Costs support training, food, veterinarian care and the like. The organization’s goal next year is to raise and completely train 22 dogs. A 501 (c)3 not-for-profit organization, donations are always welcomed. Donations can be made via their website, k9guardians.org. Volunteers can also help with puppy raising, becoming a dog sponsor and supporting the group through Amazon Smile.

Andrew Aguirre announced that the Boys and Girls Club has received a grant from Major League Baseball tied in with the All Star Game; they will be building a ‘Tee-Ball’ park near the Mitchell Branch Facility in Grape Day Park.

 

Jack Anderson announced that our Four-Way-Test Speech Contest winner, Evan Santos would be speaking on March 24 at Carlsbad Rotary’s evening meeting.

Program:

 

Jeff Johnson introduced Stacy Ellison, the Executive Director of the Escondido History Center. Stacy spoke about many of the activities of the Center in Grape Day Park and some of the changes being contemplated by the organization.

Part of the new effort is to enhance community awareness of the History Center and its various facilities in the Park.

 

There is also planning underway to change a few things about the Grape Day celebration traditionally held the Saturday after Labor Day. Plans are underway for a late afternoon/evening event to take advantage of the late September weahter. The event will also include more music and ‘adult’ activities.

 

Stacy also spoke about the Center’s efforts to digitize the thousands of photographs they have of Escondido’s history; essentially making them available on line. 

 

All-in-all, there are many new and exciting things planned for the community as it remembers, and re-lives Escondido History.
