Kevin Bowcock, President Elect of the Escondido East Club was introduced  as a visiting Rotarian. Kevin also shared information with our Sunrise Members regarding the East Club’s annual Bar-B-Cue event on May 11 in Kit Carson Park. The event supports veteran’s programs and first responders in the Escondido area… Mark had tickets for sale…

Spring Flower Baskets are available as a fund-raising project of the East Rotary Club… Cost is $30 and they will be delivered to our Club on the Thursday before Mother’s Day…Funds raised will provide support for Police and Fire Cadet programs in Escondido…

High Fives and Announcements:

President Dave announced that the Multiple Sclerosis Association Golf Event would be at the Bridges on May 20…

The President also shared a thank you note from EcoLife, for our Club’s $500 donation after the recent presentation from Barbara Fiorina…

Dave also shared a note of thanks for our supporting the amount of $2,500 for the Guatemala Literacy program…

And, finally, President Dave announced the last Board meeting for this outstanding year will be held on April 24 at Past President Rich Aeling’s home…

Some of our Club Members were traveling recently… 

Membership Chair Joe Holtz visited the Holy Land and brought President Dave some mud from the Dead Sea… Though from the Dead Sea, this mud is purported to possess amazing ‘life’ qualities…

 

Linda Bailey traveled recently to Hawaii; she brought President Dave a deck of cards for our Opportunity Drawings and his own Plumaria plant…

 

 

Past President and Rotary Foundation Chair, Kevin Svetich reminded Club Members of the opportunity to continue supporting the Rotary Foundation. Escondido Sunrise is currently ranked 14th in District 5340…

Escondido Sunrise is currently at $185 per capita; the top club in the District, Rancho Bernardo is at $378 per capita… We are currently behind the top club by $9,200… You can make a difference!

 

Edwin Oketch; recently spoke at the RYLA Event... Edwin brings his life experiences from the ghetto in Kenya where he leads an orphanage program... Edwin greeted us, and is visiting a number of local Rotary Clubs while he is in San Diego...

 

 

 

Program: 

Today’s speaker was County Supervisor Jim Desmond, representing the 5th District. Although Jim does not represent Escondido, his District provides services to much of the unincorporated area near and around Escondido.

Supervisor Desmond shared that he is proud to work with community groups like Rotary, as we find ways to get things done to help the community… Jim shared some details about the services the County provides, including; law enforcement, jails and court services, and County health services. 

He spoke about the transportation challenges in North County, particularly the need to widen State Route 78 and to connect the HOV lanes on I-15…And the challenges faced by NCTD relative to fare-paying passengers and the need for subsidies. He also spoke about his role on the Regional Airport authority and the plans to expand Terminal 1 at Lindbergh Field…

The Supervisor also spoke about housing issues and the need for affordable housing in the county. He shared the challenges with upcoming State of California control over affordable housing projects near transportation hubs; he emphasized the need for the County to get ahead of the housing goals so that the State does not come in and exert control over local housing needs…
