June 1 Program: Alzheimer’s Association of San Diego:

Rosie Barnett introduced Jeffree Itrich who spoke about the Alzheimer’s challenges facing nearly 63,000 residents of San Diego County; and is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.

Her experience as a nurse was highlighted as she described the ‘onset’ of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the early 1980’s much of which has been supported by new medical breakthroughs. Her hope is that Alzheimer’s research can improve the opportunities for those afflicted through medicines that will stem the progressive nature of the disease. San Diego County, with so much medical research, leads the fight worldwide. She stated that women are  often afflicted more than men; she also stated that a ‘heart-healthy’ lifestyle (quality diet and exercise) can be a great deterrent to Alzheimer’s.

June 8 Program: Escondido Education COMPACT:

Past President Jack Anderson introduced Executive Director Patty Huerta of the Education COMPACT. Supporting the presentation was Carolina Ruiz a Youth Development Specialist with COMPACT.

The presentation focused on COMPACT’s initiative to enhance exercise, diet and general health of residents in the Mission Park area (Mission and Ash) of Escondido. Specifically focusing on opportunities to enhance bicycle riding, pedestrian safety and use of the “Escondido Creek Trail.” Efforts include opportunities for groups to adopt portions of the Creek Trail and to engage the community through a program of Resident Leadership development. COMPACT carries out these programs through extensive partnerships including, The Escondido Police Department, the City of Escondido Engineering Department, and numerous other San Diego bike and transportation cooperatives.

I addition to these programs to enhance community health, the COMPACT focuses on youth development through their ‘Project Hero’ in which mentor support is provided to community youth.
