Waiting SongsAs the name suggests, barbershop music originated in 19th-century American barbershops, a place where men, usually African-American, came to socialize. While waiting for their turn with the barber, these men sang, harmonized improvised songs and created a genre of music that is now known as barbershop music. Straw HatsA barbershop quartet is a group of 4 men, each with their own unique voices - second tenor, first tenor, bass, and baritone - singing songs in the barbershop style. Barbershop quartets have a signature dressing style that includes bright striped jackets, straw hats, and big mustaches. How to Celebrate?
Did You Know……that barbershop music is a type of acapella? Acapella is a style of singing without any accompanying instrumental music. The word comes from the Italian word for according to the church. |

Send in the clowns! Today is World Circus Day. Everywhere in the world, it's always been a big deal when the circus comes to town. The carnival atmosphere, the big tent, lions, elephants, death-defying daredevil acts, sword swallowers, clowns and much more awaits circus attendees young and old. The circus, with its wide range of entertainers, has performed their acts around the world, in small towns and big cities for hundreds of years. The circus is still alive and well in many parts of the world. In the United States, this is not the case. Since the 1800's Americans in small towns and big cities flocked to the circus when it came to town. Decades ago, there were several circuses traveling and preforming in the U.S. Today, the circus no longer brings smiles and laughter. The circus has fallen silent, a victim of animal rights group protests, falling attendance, and higher operating costs. Since 1919, Ringling's Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus performed their acts all over the U.S. They were billed as "The Greatest Show on Earth". They performed their last act on October 6, 2018, putting a sad face on clowns all over the United States. Watch some movies with a circus theme, eat orange peanuts, and imagine if you owned an elephant! |

This is my kind of day, the kind of day you can sink your teeth into. National Prime Rib Day gets your mouth watering, and starts you drooling. And, that is with a big, thick, juicy cut of prime rib, cooked perfectly to your liking. Don't forget the au jus and the fully loaded baked potato. |

Hairstyle Appreciation Day celebrates uniqueness of all styles of hair. It allows us to express our individuality. Each generation of youth creates it's own hairstyles, or come back to style that were popular years ago. We include among the hairstyles, hair coloring and shaved heads. After all, no hair is a hair style. Perhaps the most famous hair style for women was the "beehive" of the fifties. During the same period, crew cuts were the cut of choice for the guys. Since our salons are closed, take this day to buy a gift card from your favorite salon (a lot you can purchase online; just ask your stylist!), and thank them! When we're opened again, be sure to tip well! Post a picture of your (even scary) hairstyle now and have a little fun! |

The "Running of the Roses" or "The Run for the Roses", as the Kentucky Derby is called, is America's premier horse racing event. Steeped in tradition, the derby is the first step in the Triple Crown of horse racing. It is held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Each year approximately 155,000 people attend this all day event, which culminates in a roughly two minute race. The Kentucky Derby is run on a 1 1/4 mile, 10 furlong, dirt track. The winner of the race receives a garland of rose and a $2 million purse. The winner has also reached the first step in winning the Triple Crown. The winning horse goes on to compete against other horses to hopefully win at the Preakness Stakes and finally at the Belmont Stakes. 20 horses compete in the Kentucky Derby. Normally, far fewer horses race in any other horse racing event. To qualify for the Derby, the 3 year old thoroughbred horses must travel the "Road to the Kentucky Derby", a series of 35 horse races at tracks in the U.S. and around the world. Points are awarded and the top 20 horses proceed to the Kentucky Derby. The race lasts about 2 minutes. It is preceded by all day long activities and celebration. The excitement increases in intensity leading up to the opening of the gates, and the "Run for the Roses" begins. Tradition abounds at the Kentucky Derby. People come dressed to the nines. Ladies wear extravagant hats and participate in a Hat Parade.. Mint Juleps are the traditional drink, and are consumed in huge quantities, approximately 120,000 during this two day event.. Triple Crown Winners Winning the Triple Crown is very difficult. Only 13 horses have won the Triple Crown. In 1978, Affirmed became just the 11th horse to win all three races. It was 37 long years before American Pharaoh accomplished the feat. The latest Triple Crown winner is Justify, in 2018. Mint Juleps are the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. Use the Official Mint Julep recipe.
The Kentucky Derby is the longest continually running sporting event in the United States. |

Walk out to your garden. Roll out your meditation mat, and assume a yoga position, as today is Garden Meditation Day. More now than ever, peaceful moments like these are a must-do! Every gardener knows that gardening is good for the mind, body, and soul. It is also known that meditation gives us inner peace and tranquility. It helps us to connect with ourselves, and even with nature. So, Garden Meditation Day is an outstanding merging of the values and benefits of gardening and meditation. Per C.L, Fornari, the creator of this special day: "Garden meditation day honors the fact that when we're working in the landscape we have the opportunity, if we choose to take it, to let the rest of the world fall away. This is indeed what meditation is: letting go of all thoughts, concerns, worries and focusing on just one thing...in this case, what we're doing in the garden. It is as calming as a mantra, or focusing on the breath, to name two common forms of meditation. So those who seek a spiritual retreat, a calming yoga experience, actually have that in their own backyards!" How can we celebrate and participate in Garden Meditation Day? Fornari suggest "Pick one thing to do. It could be pulling weeds, planting seedlings, turning soil or spreading mulch. Go out with the idea that you'll spend X amount of time on that task...it could be 20 minutes or two hours...it doesn't matter but be realistic. Leave your cell phone in the house. That's right, leave your phone behind! (You can do it.) As you work, focus only on what your task at hand is. When you notice other things that have to be done, thank your mind for mentioning those but tell yourself you'll think about those tasks later. Gently turn your mind and body back to the one job at hand every time you're distracted. At the end of your work, or when your time finishes, take satisfaction in what you've accomplished. A deep breath, and then return to the world." |

On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified defeat of a European colonial power, and a victory for the Mexican people. This single battle was the roots of Cinco de Mayo. Note: Cinco de Mayo is not the celebration of Mexican Independence which is celebrated on September 16th. Though we can't have a big party to celebrate, that doesn't mean you can't support your local Mexican restaurant by ordering some takeout (maybe even a margarita!) and enjoying some time outside! |

Everybody has a mother and absolutely no one is more special than mom. Sure, dad is really important. And, grandparent's too. But moms, well they are just the greatest. Often taken for granted, they are always our strongest supporter. You can't do wrong in Mom's eyes. When you are hurt, or not feeling well....there is no one else that can help you more than Mom. I saw this clearly recently as our son was in the emergency room. Sure, dad was an important presence. But, the look in my son's eyes with his mom by his side was certain affirmation of mom's comforting ways, and importance. So go out and celebrate Mother's Day. First and foremost, spend time with her. If you absolutely can not be there, take time for a long phone call. Flowers, cards, candy and gifts are all part of the day. But, mom wants some time with you far more than anything else. Did you know? The first Mother's Day was May 10, 1908 in Philadelphia. If you can't see your mom this year, consider sending her flowers from a local shop, purchasing a gift basket from a local store, or even just mailing her a card! |

National Nurses Week, and a number of specific Nurses Days during this week, provides recognition to nurses for their contributions and commitment to quality health care. It brings awareness to the importance of nurses in the care , comfort, and well being of all of us, and especially our children and the aging, and those in poor health. Origin of Nurses Day: International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12, because this it's the birthday of Florence Nightingale. In 2003, National School Nurses Day was moved from the fourth Wednesday in January to the Wednesday of Nurses Week. Many websites, still record School Nurses Day in January, unaware of this change. |

Frog Jumping Day is a great day to jump like a frog. Or, is today intended to jump "over" a frog? Either way, today is a fun day. But, is this truly the reason for this day? Read on......... The roots of Frog Jumping Day go back to Mark Twain's first short story. It was first published in 1865 as "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog". Later, he published it as "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". It is also known under a third title "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". While we have discovered many links and references to Frog Jumping Day evolving from this Mark Twain short story, we have yet to discover the reason for this particular date. May 13th is neither the date of Mark Twain's birth , nor his death. How is the best way to celebrate Frog Jumping Day? Read Mark Twains story "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" |

As the old saying goes….. "Give a man some vegetables, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to grow a vegetable garden, and you feed his whole family for life!" It's a hungry world. Famine affects millions upon millions of people. If everyone had even a small garden, there would be far fewer people suffering from starvation. For the average person, having a vegetable garden, helps to ease the family food budget, too. In addition, people who grow some or all of their own vegetables often do so organically, or at least with less of those harmful chemical insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Hmmm? Healthier food for my children? Now this alone is a great reason to start a vegetable garden today! Looking for ideas on where to plant your first garden? Millions upon millions of people are already gardening in some amazing places. Backyard gardens are what normally comes to mind. Urban community gardens also abound. In urban environments, vacant lots are often used (seek permission from the owner first). People grow gardens in containers and pots on balconies, decks, and patios. Apartment rooftops can be a great place for your new garden. For those of us who are space constrained, vertical gardens can be the solution. Participation in this day is fun and easy. Join in the fun hobby of gardening. Simply start a vegetable (or flower or herb) garden. If you are already a gardener, encourage and help someone to start their very first garden. Start small, making it easy to handle and less like a chore. Chances are, you will make your garden larger in future years, as you grow your gardening expertise. |

Taken at face value, a penny doesn't buy you much, if anything. It used to. During your parents and grandparents days, a penny bought a lot of things. Most notably, "Penny Candy" got its name because a piece of candy cost a penny. Inflation year after year after year, eroded the penny's value. There has even been some discussion as to whether to discontinue the penny....Heaven forbid! The penny still serves a very useful purpose... at least some of them are lucky pennies. Lucky pennies are found on the ground. Not all of the pennies you find will be lucky. But, it will only take one lucky penny used to scratch off the mega winner on a scratch-off ticket. Are you superstitious? Superstition has it that you should only pick up a penny that is lying face up. Here are some other uses for pennies:

Hamburgers are America's favorite sandwich. What would a Memorial Day, or Fourth of July picnic be without the very American hamburger? So, it only fitting that we have a special day to celebrate our cherished burgers. Hamburgers are American in origin. However, there is much controversy as to whether Hamburgers were first created in the 19th or the 20th century. We won't fret over when they were first created. We'll just savor the flavor. Have it your way. The best way to cook a hamburger, is grilled on an outdoor grill. You can also cook them indoors on a frying pan. Add your favorite fixings. Cheese is all but a must. Then, there's lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, bacon, and so much more. And, don't forget the condiments. Mustard, ketchup, and relish are the favorites. The World's Largest Burger: On September 2, 2012, the Black Bear Casino Resort in Carlton, Minnesota cooked the world's largest hamburger at 2,014 pounds. That's the equivalent of 8,056 Quarter Pounders! Hamburgers always seem to taste best with a side order of French fries. Did You Know? May is National Hamburger Month |

National Macaroon Day honors the Macaroon, a flourless cookie. It is popular among the Jewish community, especially during Passover, when Jews can not cook with flour. But, the popularity of the Macaroon doesn't stop there. It is also enjoyed around the world. Macaroons are made from ground nuts and leavened egg whites. Coconut and potato starch is common in Macaroon recipes. Macaroons were believed to have been first made in an Italian monastery in 1792. While monks are well known for their vows of silence, they just couldn't keep quiet about this tasty treat. Celebrate National Macaroon Day by baking and eating macaroons.
