This week with SD Coastal...
Please join us at 6:00pm this Wednesday at Leucadia Pizza for our regular club meeting. There will be food, drinks, and you'll hear about upcoming events and service opportunities.

This meeting we will have former Del Mar lifeguard, retired American diplomat, and current Rotary Club of Del Mar President-elect Brett Mattei who is leading the U.S. side of the binational effort to design, fund, build and outfit a Marine Safety Center for ocean lifeguards in Rosarito Beach.

U.S. and Mexican Rotarians will save lives and promote economic development in Baja, California by constructing a Marine Safety Center on Rosarito Beach. The Center will dramatically improve the monitoring of beachgoers and shorten ocean rescue and medical aid response times. This upgrade in public safety resources will spur growth of one of the region’s top economic drivers: tourism.

SD Coastal Rotary is family-friendly and kids are always welcome. Guests can let us know if they'll be attending through RSVP on Facebook.

Questions or want to add something to the agenda? Reach out to Jessica Long, Club President.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Donate Blood

One of our fellow Rotarians in the Thousand Oaks area (which, as you know, suffered from a mass shooting recently) has requested we donate blood. Here is an account of her story.

"I woke up this morning to the horrific news of the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar in Thousand Oaks. As far as I know, there were no Rotarians or Rotaractors killed or injured. One of our Rotarian's daughter was at the bar but uninjured. We have two Rotaract Clubs in that area. The site is less than a block from where our Thursday club meets and the roads are blocked so they can't meet today.
Needless to say, the Thousand Oaks area as well as District 5240 are hurting today. Several of you have reached out to ask what you and your Districts can do and I really appreciate your support and concern.
If you would, please ask that Rotarians donate blood today at their local blood banks in the memory of those who lost their lives and honor those patrons and first responders who had witness that terrible scene. One of the deputies who was first to arrive was gunned down and died. Rotarians have a need to help, that's who we are. So if you could, forward my message on to your membership."

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Rotary International President coming to San Diego!
La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club will be hosting Rotary International President Barry Rassin at their January 11, 2019 meeting at 7am. This is an extreme honor and privilege, and they are extending an invitation to our club to join us that morning.

The goals is to get as many Rotarians and guests there as possible, so spread the word!

The meeting will be held at the Braille Institute (UTC), so they can accommodate everyone. The cost for breakfast is $25 per person.

PB Rotaract Mentor Program
The Pacific Beach Rotaract has requested our assistance in matching some of their members with some volunteers in our club to serve as their mentors. The time commitment is up to you and the mentee, but it would be great if you'd be willing to meet with one of individuals listed below approximately once a month. Their names and their experience/goals are included below:

  • Derren Lechuga-Human Resources or Insurance, Rotary
  • Anthony De Guzman-government  (all levels), non-profit, political science (Match with Michael Mena)
  • Tanya Pulley-non-profit (starting one)
  • Jessie Case-non-profit (management)
  • Maddison Larson-develop career goals (has Mechanical engineering/US Navy background)
  • Paloma Samano-Mental Health/Community Outreach   (Match with Michael Mena)

For their full profile, please ask Michael or Satoko. If you have any of the experience they are looking for, it would be great if you could meet with them! Its also perfectly ok if they are matched with more than one mentor. Let Michael or Satoko know and they will reach out to PB Rotaract. This is a great opportunity to have a direct impact on someone else's career and personal goals!
