SOS Meeting at Kilowatt Brewing in Kearny Mesa

In lieu of the regular club meeting this week, please join us at Kilowatt Brewing Kearny Mesa for a social happy hour event. They do trivia games every Wednesday starting at 7 PM with cool prizes, and have tons of tasty beers and sours on draft. Come have a good time with your Rotary friends as we say goodbye to the first month of 2018!

We will also be going over some additional details for our upcoming Mexico trip scheduled for May 5-6.

Guests can let us know if they'll be attending through RSVP on Facebook.

Questions or want to add something to the agenda? Reach out to Craig Hothem, Club President.

Volunteer Recap: Living Coast
Our group of 20 Rotarians and Rotaractors spent this past Saturday morning doing gardening work at the Living Coast Discovery Center. We planted over 40 shrubs, watered their entire pollinator garden (multiple times due to the dry conditions), cleaned some of their rare plants' leaves - all within an hour and a half! Then, their horticulturist Paul gave us a short tour of their grounds and gave us some very interesting facts about San Diego's biodiversity. Did you know, San Diego County has more biodiversity than any comparable square footage in the continental United States?!?

Below are some pictures from the event. And of course, no event in Chula Vista would be complete without a lunch visit to Tacos El Gordo ;)

And last but not least, the video they made interviewing Sarah about our group for their website and Social Media page:

Tariq Khamsa Foundation Presentation Pre-Video
On February 21 our speakers will be from the Tariq Khamsa Foundation, an organization dedicated to teaching and inspiring peace, hope, and forgiveness in youth and setting them on a path towards opportunity. TKF was founded in 1995, after college student Tariq Khamisa was killed by a 14-year-old gang member, Tony Hicks. Tony was tried as an adult and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Tariq’s father, Azim Khamisa, felt this tragedy created victims on both ends of the gun. Azim, in an act of extraordinary grace and forgiveness, reached out to Tony’s grandfather, Ples Felix. The two men came together in the spirit of healing to end youth violence.

The two men recently did a TED talk featured below, that we'd encourage you all to watch before they come present to our club. You'll be inspired and have a better appreciation for the journey these two men have been on over the last couple decades:
