This week with SD Coastal...

Service Project at Feeding America

In lieu of our regular club meeting, please join us for a hands-on service project at  the Feeding America warehouse. They will have us help with a number of different projects depending on what's needed at the time, including filling bags with fresh produce to be later delivered to children in need, sorting food that has been pulled from grocery store shelves to prevent it from reaching the landfill and instead into the hands of families, repacking bulk products received by Feeding America, or even some simple cleaning around the warehouse. Please wear close-toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a bit dirty. For questions or more information please contact our Service Chair Tom at service@sdcoastalrotary.org.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Bridge to Beach
Some of the kids from Refugee Tutoring have been taking swimming lessons over the summer and this event will help teach the kids in how to surf, stand up paddle board and boogie board.  There will be water activities (surfing, snorkeling, SUP) and a BBQ, all volunteers are welcome to join and help supervise a small group of students.  Come out and help with all of the fun festivities.

Message from the coordinator of the event at Out of the Boat Swim:

We anticipate 40 elementary age kids and 20-25 middle school age kiddos so any assistance your group could provide would be awesome! We divide the kids into groups and have them rotate through the activities. We will pair off kids with volunteers for the day so the more volunteers the better!! Volunteers don't necessarily need to know to instruct the water activities- there will be life guards at the stations working with the kids. The event takes place at mission bay.

For more information please contact Naomi@outoftheboatswim.org.

Out of the Boat Kids Day
Jenny Parker is involved with an organization called Out of the Boat (http://www.outoftheboatswim.org/). They work with underprivileged kids to teach them about water safety. They are having an event August 12 from 8-noon to teach kids about safety at the beach and would like volunteers. Craig sent out more details via an email for those interested. If you have any questions please contact Jenny at jenny@jparkermd.net.

Hands of Peace Farewell Celebration
You may remember that Hands of Peace received a district grant the last two years supported by several local clubs including ours. Hands of Peace has just begun it's 15th year of work with Israeli and Palestinian teens with 96 participants here and in Chicago. In a three week program this July, the participants will  undergo daily dialogue programs with facilitators, leadership and critical thinking training and attend conflict resolution seminars with experts in the field. If you would like to see your Rotary dollars at work and know more about Hands of Peace, the perfect opportunity is their Farewell Celebration on Sunday, July 30. You will get a chance to meet the founder and leaders of the organization and hear from the participants and see videos that they have produced. You will really enjoy this experience -  it is magic to see Israelis and Palestinians who have bonded in a shared dream to resolve their conflict at home.
Date: Sunday, July 30th
Location: Temple Solel
3575 Manchester Ave, Cardiff by the sea
Time: 5:00-7:30pm
Cost: $35
There will be appetizers and dessert, a silent auction featuring items from the Middle East, a multimedia presentation and opportunities to support the program.  To purchase tickets, please visit https://www.handsofpeace.org/farewell-celebration-san-diego/. For more questions, please contact Jenny Parker at jenny@jparkermd.net.
REGISTRATION NOW CLOSED - Orphanage Beautification in Valle de Guadelupe

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED for our next trip to Valle de Guadalupe for orphanage beautification on Saturday August 26 - Sunday August 27. We will be working at a smaller, all boys orphanage to help them paint several structures, repair some stairs, do some fun art projects with the kids and feed them a great lunch. The format will be similar to previous trips, leaving Saturday morning at 7am and coming back Sunday afternoon around 5pm. We will be working in the Valle at the orphanage during the day then having a dinner in a nearby restaurant (La Esperanza). We plan on staying in Ensenada at the Cortez Hotel and going out on the town in Ensenada (yes, we will find a place that's got the fight on TV). If you did not register to attend this time, please feel free to still support the trip by donating at our next meeting. If you have any questions please contact Tom at service@sdcoastalrotary.org.
