Join us on Saturday, January 27th from 9am - 11am while we help plant and paint some new 'pollinator' gardens at the Living Coast Discover Center in Chula Vista. Club members may recall when the Living Coast came to speak to our club about the work they do for local marine life and ecosystems, and that they're one of the rare undiscovered jewels of San Diego (who knew there was such an aquarium in Chula Vista?).
We will be painting and planting things to help them create their pollinator garden in an effort to sustain certain local plants and bees. Please wear gardening/painting clothes and close-toed shoes. After our volunteer event we will have the option to stick around and tour the facility as their guest.... When: Saturday, January 27th from 9am - 11am Where: Living Coast Discovery Center 1000 Gunpowder Point Dr. Chula Vista, CA 91910 Dress code: Dress comfortably (long sleeves) with closed toed shoes – bring a hat, glasses, sunscreen, and water. Directions/Parking: - 5 fwy South - E Street EXIT - Immediate right at the stop light into the main parking lot Since we will be arriving before the Living Coast opens, they ask that everyone meet in the main parking lot and carpool in to the greenhouse area in as few cars as possible since there is very limited parking inside. Again, PARK IN TBE MAIN LOT AND WE WILL CARPOOL INTO THE MAIN GATE. For questions or if you get lost, please call Sarah Davis at 619-846-8341. For more about the Living Coast Discover Center, visit their website at: http:// |

You're invited to join us for an awesome rock climbing experience as we raise funds for our Rotary Club! For just $25, you'll get everything you need to start climbing including the gear (harness & shoes) and a short intro lesson for those who need it. Funds raised from this event will benefit our next service project where we’ll be heading to Mexico to build a loft home for a family in need.
DETAILS: When: Wednesday, March 28th from 6-9pm Where: Vertical Hold Poway 13026 Stowe Dr, Poway, CA 92064 What: $25 fee gets you everything you need to climb for 3 hours. Vertical hold has both electronic and hand-held belays so you can climb with or without a partner. Please wear athletic clothes and feel ...free to bring a water bottle. Must be 13+ to climb and children 13-17 will need a signed parent/guardian waiver. Who: Rotary is an international humanitarian and service club dedicated to making the world a better place. Our SD Coastal Rotary Club is local chapter whose members are active in both our local and international communities. Why: to raise money for our loft home build with Project Mercy. Homes cost approximately $5,000 in materials and take just a day to build. This home will allow them to stay warm, dry, and most importantly, safe. We look forward to having fun and giving back with you at Vertical Hold! Please invite your friends and help us spread the word! For questions please contact Allan - (619) 246-9300 |

Please join us at 6:00pm this Wednesday at Leucadia Pizza for our regular club meeting. There will be food, drinks, and you'll hear about upcoming events and service opportunities. Our speaker this week will be none other than our own Jessica Long, who will be talking about new developments with our LEAD and RYLA programs. You won't wanna miss learning all the ways Rotary connects with youth!
If you are curious about Rotary and the many wonderful things the international humanitarian organization provides, this is a great opportunity to learn more about how you can get involved. Our club members (about 30 of us) would love to meet you and tell you all the wonderful things Rotary has done in our lives. Our meetings are fairly casual compared to most Rotary clubs: ~We have no dress code (though many members come straight from work) ~No need to know anything about Rotary - you'll get plenty of information at the meeting ~We start at 6pm, but the speakers don't begin until 6:30 (so if traffic causes you to arrive a litte after 6 that's OK) ~We meet in the patio at Leucadia Pizza, so your well behaved dogs and/or children are welcome. Loft Build Home in Tijuana, Mexico! Please join us the weekend of May 5th - 6th as we build a loft home for a family in need! We'll be partnering with the nonprofit Project Mercy to construct a pre-fabricated loft home and bathroom in TJ. For those who haven't done a loft home build with us before, this is a great hands-on project where by the end of the day on Saturday we will be handing a young family their first ever set of keys to a home that will keep them dry, warm, and safe. BROAD DETAILS: When: Saturday May 5th at 6:45am through Sunday May 6th at 4:00pm Where: We will be building the home in Tijuana and then having dinner and staying in Rosarito. Sunday will have various activities for people to enjoy in Rosarito. Cost: $150 per participant which covers your lodging Saturday night, transportation costs, lunch on Saturday during the build, and your portion of the materials cost for the home. Who: This trip is open to Rotarians only as we have a volunteer limit of no more than 15 people. Participants must be a fully inducted member of a Rotary Club and have gone to at least 1 volunteer event with our club already. Our club's Rotarians get top priority, but if we don't fill up the 15 spots we may invite other Rotarians who have joined us before at various events. Why: In conjunction with Project Mercy, we will be building a home for a young family in need. Wendi, a single mom age 24, and her 2 and the 3 year old children currently lives in what most Westerners would refer to as a dumpsite, literally. They are pictured below in front of their current dwelling, along with a picture of a previous loft home we built that will be similar to what we build for them. Wendi works full time in a market and earns roughly $75 per week - which as a single mom is nowhere near enough to give her kids everything she desires for them. TO DO LIST: 1) Ensure your passport is valid and bring your Global Entry card if you have one (bring the actual card, do not rely on the linkage between GE and your passport alone). For those with Global Entry, you'll be riding back across the border in one of our SENTRI vehicles. If you don't have Global Entry, you'll be dropped off in the walking line and will walk across (you won't be alone as there are several people without Global Entry) 2) We can figure out roommates once at the hotel and seeing the final room count they have available for us.They have secured 8 for us and we have 15 people going. Since it is a busy weekend we may not be able to purchase additional rooms for those who wish to room alone. If you do end up with a solo room please be aware you will owe an additional $75. The list of trip attendees is: Sarah, Mari, Tom B., Asian Tom, Laurie, Loretta, Allan, Derek, Quan, Andrew, Chris, Mark K., our new club member Satoko, and our northern Rotarians Tim M and Max B (both have attended our MX trips before). FINE DETAILS: Departure: For those with Global Entry, you may wish to meet your assigned driver near their home and park your cars there overnight vs meeting at the border and paying for parking (see below for your assigned driver and contact them directly). For those without Global Entry, you will need to park your vehicle in a paid lot near the Otay Mesa border. We will meet as a large group at the iHop parking lot at the Otay Mesa border (2390 Roll Dr. San Diego, CA 92154) at 6:45am and depart via our assigned carpool by 7am sharp. Be careful not to miss the freeway exit as there is no turnaround point after and you'll wind up driving yourself through Mexico. There is a paid parking lot just South of the iHop that is fairly cheap and safe for 24hour parking. If you are not ready to go by 7am, you will miss our caravan and will need to take yourself into Mexico.
Bring: Bring cash with you for dinner Saturday, lunch Sunday, and any snacks/drinks/souvenirs you may want. We may get a table at a club Saturday night, which can run $20-40 per person depending. Dinner/lunch may be $20-40 each depending. Bring your passports and Global Entry card if you have it. Other than that, you'll want to wear close-toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting paint on, as we'll be working on a real construction site with paint, nails, etc. You'll want to bring a separate outfit for going out Saturday night and clothes/bathing suits for Sunday depending on what activity you wish to do. Please note that we will have very limited space for your luggage in the vehicles, so pack as lightly as possible. Meals: We will provide lunch on Saturday at the worksite, most likely pizza from a local vendor. We will also have lots of snacks and bottled water throughout the day. Once our build is completed we'll drive to the hotel, check in, and take a vote for if people want to eat first and then shower/get ready for the night out or if they can wait to eat and wish to shower/change first. Either way, we will be eating somewhere casual in Rosarito for both dinner and brunch the following day. Lodging: We will be staying at the Los Pelicanos hotel in Rosarito, a beautiful hotel right on the beach and only about half a mile away from the nightlife. They have a pool and hot tub. Because we are going on Cinco de Mayo weekend (which, although not a holiday for Mexicans, has been taken over by American tourists), most other hotels were sold out. For more info on the hotel, see https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g150774-d169755-Reviews-Los_Pelicanos_Hotel-Rosarito_Baja_California.html. Sunday Activities: The beach in Rosarito offers ATV riding, horseback riding, along with lounging/volleyball. We will all head to the beach together and designate a common spot for those who just want to do beach stuff, and then anyone who wants to do other activities can break off and do so on their own as everything is close together. Please bring extra cash for activities if you decide to do that. Security: The State Department recently issued a level 2 travel warning for areas in Baja California, including our destinations. We will be sure to be mindful of this while down there but feel no reason to be overly alarmed. We will be in a large group and are staying at a nice hotel in the heart of the crowded tourist area. As long as we stay together and use the buddy system, there should be no issues. Still, we recommend not wearing any flashy clothing/jewelry in order not to draw extra attention. Returning: We will be coming back around 4pm on Sunday. Those with Global Entry can go back in the carpool vehicles that all have SENTRI. Those without will have to cross by foot and will be dropped off at the pedestrian line. For additional questions or concerns, please see Sarah D. at Sarah.E.Davis@Thrivent.com or 619-846-8341. Looking forward to a fun trip!
