Founded in 1975, Canine Companions for Independence® is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. The assistance dogs we breed, raise and train aren’t just the ears, hands and legs of their human partners. They’re also goodwill ambassadors and often, their best friends. They open up new opportunities and new possibilities, and spread incredible joy. We unite people with dogs in a powerful program that leads to greater independence and confidence. |

Resounding Joy Music Therapy - Palliative Program
Oct 18, 2018 12:00 PM
Dr. Barbara Reuer, after founding her San Diego-based music therapy provider, MusicWorx Inc. in 1987, realized the nationwide shortage of music therapists. Dr. Reuer envisioned a concept of training volunteers how to provide supportive and recreational music programs under the direction of music therapists. In 2003, she applied to Wheat Ridge Ministries through MusicWorx Inc., and received a $38,000 two-year grant (2004-2005) to develop this outreach program. Calvary Lutheran Church in Solana Beach not only served as a fiscal sponsor, but also adopted it as an outreach program called ReSOUNDing Faith Ministry. Thirty members from two churches immediately trained to become volunteers to provide supportive and recreational music to individuals confined at home or in skilled nursing facilities. The volunteers were eventually called Joy Givers and the program became the Mindful Music program. In 2005 Resounding Faith Ministry changed the name to Resounding Joy Inc., and incorporated as a California 501(c)3 nonprofit and by the end of the year, contributions, gifts and grants totaled $47,000. |

Disaster Preparedness
Dec 06, 2018 12:00 PM
Steve Deal has been an active Red Cross volunteer since 2015. As a Disaster Action Team member, he frequently responds to house fires, floods, and other disasters that have displaced residents from their San Diego County homes. The team ensures such displaced families have access to lodging, clothing and food for at least the next few days until a Red Cross Case Worker can help guide them through their recovery path. Other Red Cross roles in which Steve serves include Disaster Duty Officer (dispatching disaster teams and other emergency Red Cross resources throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties), damage assessment (most recently in Houston after Hurricane Harvey), canteen driver (supporting displaced groups, search and rescue teams, and others), Home Fire Campaign (installing free smoke alarms in senior and low income homes), and Speaker Bureau (delivering preparedness and other presentations to companies, community organizations, and others). Prior to launching his Red Cross volunteer career, Steve served as CEO of Indyme Solutions, a technology company he founded and lead for over 25 years. Indyme designs, manufactures, sells, installs, and maintains specialized communication systems used in over 22,000 retail stores and other businesses worldwide. Steve still serves as Chairman of the company. In addition to volunteering for the Red Cross, Steve is a board member and Audit Chair for the San Diego Rescue Mission. The SDRM provides a range of recovery and assistance services for the homeless and other vulnerable members of our community. Steve enjoys honing his public speaking skills at Hardhats Toastmasters Club, sailing, travelling, hiking and camping the Sierras, gardening, and performing tasks as a wanna-be handyman. Married for over 35 years, Steve and Viki have been blessed with three children and two grandchildren. |

East County Transitional Living Center
Mar 14, 2019 12:00 PM
The story began over 15 years ago as a group of business man and a small church began to transform not only an old motel but thousands of homeless men, women and children. Many of the larger churches in the county, the Southern Baptist Association and the City of El Cajon all came together to develop one of the most successful transitional living centers in the country. The story continues as you now consider becoming a part of providing an additional 40 rooms for homeless families. Today in San Diego County hundreds of families are sleeping in their cars and are waiting for a room to open so that they too would experience the transformational change that is offered here at ECTLC. |
