7:49 AM
Dear Fellow Rotarian,

I'm sure you're all aware of the devastating fires in Santa Rosa and other parts of Sonoma and Napa Counties. The personal stories of friends and loved ones who have been impacted are all coming in now. A friend and fellow Rotarian in Glen Ellen lost his home and his whole neighborhood burned down.

I'll keep this message brief: Please consider opening your homes to evacuees who may need temporary housing due to these fires. This would include fellow Rotarians and others who have been impacted by these fires.

Stay safe, and we'll get more information to you on how we can all help as the day progresses.  (continue below for ongoing details...)

District 5130 Rotarians
DG Bob and I have been in contact this morning regarding the fires that have started over the night. The first order of business is to make sure our evacuated Rotarians and their families have a place to go.  I have offered to help with that.

I have 2 lists going and will be working on getting people taken care of. First, please let me know if you need a place to go including how many of you there are, animals you have, RV and any special needs. Second, if you are able to house evacuees let me know how many people you can take, types of animals and if you have space for an RV to park.   For both lists, please be sure you give me your city or area you are in

Stay strong and hang in there - we will get through this together. Feel free to call me or text if that's easier. 707-349-0815

Advisory: How to stay safe during the fires

We are working hard to keep you as safe as possible. Here are things you can do to keep yourself and your neighbors safe:

1. Do not call 911 for general information. Call 911 for unattended active flames or life-threatening emergencies.
2. If you're safe, stay indoors and close the windows.
3. Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
4. Evacuation areas are unsafe. Follow instructions from emergency workers. Do not return until evacuation orders are lifted.
5. Stay informed through social media, Nixle updates, radio, and TV.

COTS

Dear Friends,

I wanted to send you a brief update from COTS about the fires in Sonoma County. Events are unfolding rapidly, and I encourage you to stay in close contact with your local Police and Fire departments for accurate and current information.

The COTS Mary Isaak Center is open for lunch today at 900 Hoper Street, Petaluma, for anyone who needs food or sanctuary. Lunch hours are 11:30am to 1:00pm, but food is available all day to anyone with emergency food needs.

Right now, our most urgent need is for blankets and sleeping bags. What we cannot use, we will pass on to our sister agencies. Please only deliver these items if you able to stay off of Highway 101 and it is safe for you to travel.

As of this morning, all of our clients in permanent housing in Rohnert Park, Petaluma, and Santa Rosa are safe. We are slowly learning about former clients who are evacuating their homes; one client is on her way to family in Sacramento.

We are in close communication with authorities and sister agencies as the situation unfolds and will keep you posted on any additional details.

Stay safe,

Mike Johnson, CEO

October 9th, 8:30 PM

Following up on President Chris' email, tonight I dropped off food, clothing and supplies at the Vets Hall (1094 Petaluma Bl South).  The staff of 20+ were very helpful and appreciative separating donations to various areas in the auditorium and kitchen.

Around 100 families were bedding down at the Vets Hall, from seniors to children - they seemed to have enough temporary/rudimentary bedding for the night.  However in the coming days we should be mindful that more families may require additional lodging and care.

Along that line, the Petaluma Elks Lodge #901 (I am also a member) is working to help those displaced by the fires, providing food to help the shelters for the coming days (breakfasts help at 6AM, lunches 10AM and dinners 5 PM) .

To help, call the Elks at 763-0901 ext 0
secretary@elks901.org
2105 S McDowell Blvd # A

Incidentally, as we receive fire-related information and opportunities to help, we frequently update our Club Runner website with feeds from fellow Rotarians, Police/Sheriff reports, National Weather Service, etc.

To view the latest each day, at the top of our Petaluma Rotary Club home page click on "URGENT - SONOMA COUNTY FIRES!!!"  and select the day of interest from the drop-down menu item (scroll down for newer/later news stories - this will be the last entry for October 9th).  Or you can simply scroll down past the revolving banner to view each "story" with the same details on a given day.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Michael and Grace Nistler
