Rotary Club of Regina Club Meeting Report September 9th, 2024 In-person meeting - Delta Hotel - 12:00 Noon
1.Meeting Chair:
President George welcomed all attendees, both in person and via Zoom. His treaty recognition stressed the need for us as Rotarians to apply our Four Way Test - is it the Truth, for without Truth there can be neither trust nor reconciliation.
Gilda led us in O-Canada. Joanna presented the blessing.
2.Speaker Name & Presentation:
Today’s speaker was our own Jerry Boulanger, President, Industrial Parks Rotary Club.
His topic: Heat Pumps. An in-depth technical presentation. The term “heat pump” is used to define systems that can move heat in either direction. Heat pumps have been around since 1976 and work on the same principle as an air conditioner. They collect heat from one location and move it to another location at a higher temperature There is no need to “burn” anything to create heat, just need energy to move it. They have both a cooling cycle and heating cycle. There are various types of heat sources: outside air, geothermal, solar thermal or waste heat. They can be air-to-air, air-to-water, water-to-air or water-to water. Under ideal conditions they can be very efficient. These conditions include items such as efficient building envelope, clean, cheap electricity, and a moderate climate. Factors to be considered with heat pumps are: carbon taxes on power and natural gas; are subsidies available for implementation; the challenge of retrofitting existing buildings; electrical grid capacity and emissions; and the challenge of electric vehicle charging on the grid. At lower temperatures their efficiency is reduced. In Saskatchewan even with the best air source technology you will likely need a backup source of heat in extreme weather conditions.
An excellent presentation.
