Rotary Club of Regina

         Club Meeting Report August 10^th, 2026.

          In-person, Delta Hotel, 12:00 Noon

1. Meeting Chair:

   President Russ opened the meeting by welcoming all club and Eastview members and guests. Unfortunately Zoom was not available.

    

   President Russ then provided our land treaty recognition. “We are on Treaty 4 land.  We recognize our rights and obligations under Treaty 4. As Rotarians, we seek to strengthen relationships between nations and to improve understanding of local Metis and First Nations.  In doing so, we rely on our 4-Way Test be our guide in what we think, what we say and what we do.”

O Canada was led by Gilda Treleaven-Gaham, followed by the blessing by Carole Bryant.

2. Speaker Name & Presentation:

   Our speakers today were Ralph and Twyla Williams, Canadian missionaries and Rotary Club members based near Arusha, Tanzania. They work with rural Maasai communities to build vital rain water harvesting systems, construct school toilets, and support local women with handicraft marketing.

   Twyla Williams works with a group called Nalepo ("by our own hands"), who make jewellery from a variety of up cycled materials and beads. The jewellery is sold with the money from a jewellery sale going to the lady who made that piece of jewellery. Twyla had a display of the jewellery for sale.

   Ralph is the current president of the Rotary Club of Arusha, in Tanzania. Arusha is a bustling city of 600,000 in north-eastern Tanzania. (Known as the "safari capital" of the country, it serves as the main starting point for travelers visiting the Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro.) It is often nicknamed the "Geneva of Africa" because it hosts international meetings and the East African Community.

   Ralph brought us up-to-date on work presently being undertaken by his club: 3 large rainwater harvesting projects, 5 school WASH projects, and maternal and baby health project. They are looking for financial support and partnerships. Ralph answered a few questions.

   A most interesting presentation. Congratulations to the Arusha club for undertaking these most worthwhile projects.

   Ralph and Twyla were thanked by President Russ. Club banners were exchanged.

3. Birthday and Anniversaries:

   Birthdays: Ernie Richardson - August 4^th; Ian Toms - August 8^th; Russel Hart - August 22^nd, George Carson - August 22^nd.

   Anniversaries:  Gilda Treleaven-Graham - 15 years; Ian Yeates - 20 years; Ian Toms - 26 years; Brian Hardy - 40 years.

    

    

4. Reports and Announcements: 

SERVICE ABOVE SELF - Community Service at Soul’s Harbour, 1632 Angus Street, on August 20th. 4:00 - 6:00 pm. We serve meals and coffee, pickup dirty dishes and put away the tables.  This is what Rotary is all about. It will only take some two hours of your time. Give it a try. Let President Russ know (russellhart11@gmail.com) if you can attend. Our next date is September 17^th.

• Salvation Army Back Packing: The annual Backpacking Packing event at 2240 13^th Ave., August 24, 2026 at 1:00 pm. Last year over 1200 backpacks were packed with school supplies. They are looking for as many as 30 volunteers. Our club has members who have volunteered in the past. President Russ says “I encourage our club to support this initiative again”.  Please let President Russ know so he can advise the SA how many volunteers will come from our club. This is another service above self project that is what Rotary is all about. It provides a very beneficial service to many young students. Put on your Rotary hat and try it - you will like it. 

• The Regina and Eastview Clubs again hosted the annual Pancake Breakfast last week. The Chief of Police, Fire Chief, other reps from police and firefighters, and Roughrider alumni came out to serve the food.  Despite a real scare early in the morning with a thunder and lightning show the breakfast was a success with many hungry attendees. Thanks to Art Wakabayashi, Ian Toms, George Carson, Ian Yeates and Russ Hart from the Regina club, and Jeff Barber, Ron Okumura, Doreen Pankewich, Al Hoeft, Karen Hoeft, Ann Grahame, Peter Peters, Peter Neufeldt and a special thank-you to Jack Wozniak, PP of Eastview Club, his wife Trish, and his daughter and all staff from New Outlook Wealth. Also, a big thank you to Gerry Belanger and his daughter who have worked tirelessly at this project for many years.

• It was announced that the funeral service for June Kaufman, wife of long-time club member Nick will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday June 20^th, at Christ the King Roman Catholic Parish, 3239 Garnet Street, Regina, SK.  

5. Other Newsworthy Items:

President Russ: “Thanks to Carole Bryant for organizing the meeting and leading us in a moment of contemplation.  Thanks to Adewale for setup and take down, Al Goudie and Doreen Pankewich (Eastview Club) at reception, Bob Terichow for greeting, Gilda for leading us in O Canada, PP George Carson for conducting the 50-50. and leading us in the 4-Way Test, and to Stewart for again acting as our Reporter.

The 50/50 pot was $183.50.  No winner.

PP George led us in the 4-WayTest to close the meeting.
