Club Meeting Report - Nov 3, 2025

1. Chair’s opening comments

President Russ welcomed everyone to the meeting and provided a land acknowledgement noting we all have rights and obligations under Treaty 4 and reaffirmed out commitment to improving relationships.

2. Today’s program

DG Wayne Jocobsen, from the Neepawa Club, was accompanied by his wife Gwen. In answering his own “rhetorical” question about why people join Rotary, he listed projects, social networking, community projects, youth programs and the “magic” of building new schools in Guatemala, temporary housing in Turkey, and establishing youth support groups in the Ukraine. He spoke about the importance of the Polio Plus Foundation and the RI Foundation and the need to focus on new memberships to continue the good work. He presented a Certificate of Appreciation to President Russ and Ian Yeates in recognition of the club’s financial contributions to RI.  The district has adopted an action plan with four pillars (adaptability, participant engagement, increasing impact, expanding reach) to which he added new membership. Last year, District 5550 was the only one in the zone to meet the RI target of 152 new net members and four new clubs.  He hopes that the momentum continues this year.  Wayne invited guests to attend the District Conference in Neepawa in May 2026. 

Cst. Pascal Chagnon, RPS presented on protecting yourself from scams and fraud. In Saskatchewan in 2023 $9.6M was lost to fraud, which is estimated to be only 10-15% of the actual amount, as underreporting is high. Cst. Chagnon, reviewed several common frauds and scams, including grandparent scams (with the use of voice cloning), QR code scams (fake sticker over original code), Microsoft scams, and the CRA scam. He provided a number of tips to protect yourself, including creating a unique family password, not clicking CRA links, using a safe transaction zone (in front of RPS station), and just slowing things down. He suggested that payments by credit cards are safter than debit cards as the credit card companies have built in security features.  Finally, Cst. Chagnon, introduced us to Daisy, O2’s AI granny who keeps scammers on the phone for hours wasting their time (so that they’re not scamming others).

Eastview Polio Plus dinner raised $1810.  Thanks to members of the Regina club that attended.

5. Other Newsworthy Items

50/50 draw, now at $304.50, lives on.  President Russ thanked those who assisted with today’s meeting, including Carole Bryant, Ian Toms, Ian Yeates, Doug Keam, Mark Stefan, Al Goudie, and George Carson.
