Chris MacLeod, Cystic Fibrosis (CF) survivor and advocate

Chris has suffered from Cystic Fibrosis since birth. At that time the life expectancy of a young person with CF was 5 years. Over the years new drugs have been developed which has allowed Chris to stay ahead of the game. He attributes his longevity not only to the development of these new drugs but also the excellent care he received over the years from the health care system. In 2020 he wrote a book entitled “Beating the Odds”. This outlines “11 lessons to overcome health crises and lead a more resilient life”.

The book outlines his very positive approach to life and how Chris faced each obstacle. Some of the chapters are:
- Attitude is Everything;
- Be the CEO of Your Own Health;
- Deam Big and Write it Down;
- Get Up, Dress Up and Show Up (sends a positive message to self and others);
- The Power of Smiling and Laughing;
- Never Give Up and
- Never Better! (his daily motto when asked how are you.)

Your attitude and gratitude are extremely important. Always be grateful for what you’ve got. Think of three things you are grateful for every day.

Chris told the story of two young ladies from Saskatchewan who played a significant role in the Government approving the latest new drug.  They held press conferences and met with Premier Moe. Due to their efforts Saskatchewan was one of the first Provinces to cover the cost of this very expensive drug.

While not promoting his book it can be purchased from Amazon or directly from his own publishing company: www.beatingtheodds.ca

Rotary members in attendance were most inspired by his presentation.
