KPBS

Monica, Director of Community Development & Engagement at KPBS, will talk about KPBS, her observations after being there 23 years and counting, and plans for the future.  She will also address how she got into this business, and was put on a path of public media all the way.  From a TV station in Seattle to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in Washington DC, to KPBS—the best station in the nation!

She will be accompanied by her colleague Joset Grenon.

Monica Medina's career in public media has spanned more than three decades. She joined KPBS in 1995. As Director of Community Development & Engagement for the station, Monica is responsible for raising $1.5 million in grant funding, and oversees major outreach campaigns, such as the annual One Book, One San Diego project, in partnership with San Diego and Tijuana library and schools, and the KPBS Kids Workshops in collaboration with the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum.

In addition, Monica develops relationships with the region’s multicultural communities, such as the San Diego Indian American Society and the California Diversity Council.  She also works with the KPBS Major Gifts team to cultivate donors, identifying potential new donors from diverse communities.

Last year, Monica helped launch the Community Heroes initiative, in partnership with the National Conflict Resolution Center.  She and her team are also spearheading the national outreach campaign for SPLASH & BUBBLES, the acclaimed PBS Kids series from the Jim Henson Company.

Monica has travelled to Brazil and to Guam, to train childcare providers and teachers how to use PBS children’s programming as part of their educational curriculum. She serves on the San Diego Girl Scouts Urban Campout committee, and the San Diego Asian Business Association Advisory Board. Monica, who has been honored with the prestigious National Center for Media Engagement Outreach Professional of the Year Award, has a B.A. from Brandeis University and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland.
