More Profound Than Pretty Plants: Science and Conservation of Medicinal Plants at SD Botanic Garden

While many people appreciate the grand aesthetic value at San Diego Botanic Garden, a behind the scenes look will reveal a much deeper role this organization has in the science and conservation of many edible, medicinal, native, and rare plants. This presentation will introduce some of the basic and applied botanical, chemical, and genetic studies on medicinal plants that the garden leads with academic, industrial, nonprofit, and tribal government partners.

Our guest speaker will be Dr. C. Benjamin Naman, PhD. Ben is Director of Cultural and Medicinal Plants Research at San Diego Botanic Garden, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Encinitas, CA. Ben’s professional specialization is research investigating medicinal plants to produce new medicines, to connect modern technology with traditional ecological knowledge, and to help our society to prioritize biodiversity conservation and the sustainability of its uses. Ben’s team works day to day in the San Diego Botanic Garden biochemistry lab, greenhouse and nursery space, seed bank, and out in the Native American and greater San Diego County communities.
