A relief fund has been established through the Rotary District 5000 Foundation as we come together to recover and rebuild. Please consider donating to this special fund and sharing the opportunity with others to help.

From Hawai'i Rotary District Governor Mark Merriam, August 9, 2023:

Today has been a tragic day for our Rotarians, families and friends on the Island of Maui. The fires across the island have changed lives forever. Truly devastating. Our sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted.

As people of action, we can take immediate action. As we come together to recover and rebuild, we need to support each other. We need to Create Hope for Maui.

Through our Rotary District 5000 Foundation, a relief fund has been established. Foundation President Dave Hamil and Treasurer Sharon Amano will handle all donations. A committee will be organized shortly to find the greatest needs for distribution of monies. A single fund will be the most helpful over time to provide the most significant benefits.

Please consider donating to this special fund.

Mahalo to the Rotary Club of Waikiki for collecting monies at their lunch meeting today. These are the first contributions to the fund.

Please also widely share this opportunity to help.

In 1985, COA launched the region’s first Beach Sweeps program to rid beaches of unsightly and harmful debris.  COA's Beach Sweeps is one of the longest running cleanups of its kind in the world.  The program has grown from 75 people at one site in 1985, to over 10,000 volunteers in 2018.  Volunteers gather from Raritan to Delaware Bays and along the ocean to clean beaches and waterways, as well as underwater sites.  They join as groups (community, school, business, and organization), families, or individuals.  Participants collect and record valuable data about debris, which is presented in annual reports and used to advance federal, state, and local programs to reduce litter.

Fish, whales, birds, and other animals often mistake litter for food.   As a result, animals get entangled in or ingest items, such as plastic bags, cigarette filters, and fishing line, with deadly results.  Cigarette filters mimic fish and have been found in the stomachs of birds and larger fish, blocking and affecting their digestion.  Also, the filters are made of plastic fibers and trap carcinogenic (cancer-causing) chemicals that are introduced into animals’ bloodstreams.
Moreover, plastic litter takes a few years to several hundred years to break down, thereby threatening wildlife for decades.  Litter in waterways can also foul boat motors and propellers, resulting in costly repairs.  Finally, littered beaches can ruin a day at the beach.  Garbage slicks and wash-ups close beaches to swimming and are detrimental to tourism and the coastal economy.

Who should participate in Beach Sweeps?

Volunteers of all ages. Children age 12 and under must be supervised by an adult. Registration is required. Register here!

How to get involved in Beach Sweeps:

Retired doctors in Finland vaccinate thousands against COVID-19

RI director and PolioPlus national advocacy adviser are responsible for an estimated 50% of vaccinations in their region

by

As news began circulating in Finland in early January that COVID-19 vaccines could soon be approved, the nation’s health authorities cautioned an excited public that it would take time to distribute the vaccine supply and train enough people to administer them.

Retired doctors Matti and Virpi Honkala learned about the potential shortage of vaccinators and contacted their region’s medical director to volunteer their services in Raahe and the surrounding area.

C-SPAN TO PRESENT AT BERKELEY HEIGHTS ROTARY

story thumbnail
On Wednesday, April 14, April Ranger from C-SPAN will be speaking at the Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights Lunch Meeting.  April Ranger has been with C-SPAN’s community relations team since 2019. She coordinates and leads presentations to educate students, civics groups and others about C-SPAN’s unfiltered mission and how its resources provide a window on Washington.

After teaching in the New York City and D.C. areas for 13 years, April returned to the nation’s capital in search of a new chapter in her career. She began her time at C-SPAN as a receptionist before shifting gears into a community relations role.

While she’s been a member of the C-SPAN family for just over a year, April is no stranger to the public affairs network. She’s been an avid fan since growing up with her grandmother in D.C. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking with her nieces and nephews and teaching virtual Sunday school. When her TV isn’t tuned to C-SPAN, you can bet it’s turned to a good comedy.

This is a virtual presentation and guests/non Rotary members are welcome to attend.  Registration is required and can be done by clicking here.

Italian Rotarians spread joy of giving

Trustee Chair K.R. Ravindran (bottom left) takes part in a virtual major donor event organized by Rotary District 2060 in Venice, Italy.

By Omar Bortoletti, Endowment/Major Gifts Adviser for Zone 14

The Rotary Foundation reminds us constantly why we are here. It reminds us who it is we serve. It reminds us that these days, these hours, while we yet walk this earth – that this is our time and we must grasp it.” These were the words of K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran, Trustee chair of The Rotary Foundation, during the recent major donor event organized by District 2060 in northeastern Italy.

Rotarians in Venice, Italy (under the leadership of District Governor Diego Vianello), had long planned to host Ravindran during Foundation Month last November, but when the pandemic persisted, we found ourselves organizing a virtual event in lieu of an in-person dinner to recognize new major donors.

Moving the event online offered certain advantages: due to the low-cost of a Zoom call, the invitation could be extended to more guests. In the end, 170 participants attended, including current and new major donors and bequest society members, current and incoming district leaders, and Foundation supporters from around northern Italy. In addition to Ravindran, other Rotary VIPs could connect from afar, like Trustee Sangkoo Yun from Korea and RI Director Roger Llhors of France.

One challenge with the virtual format we faced was how to make each of the 16 new major donors feel special and appropriately recognized, even though the traditional major donor pin and crystal could not be presented in person. Through the advance planning of my team of District Endowment and Major Gift Subcommittee Chairs, each donor submitted a photo of themselves carrying the crystal and wearing their pin. These were developed into an elegant, running slide show.

To add a personal touch, we accompanied the photos with a short quotation from the donor, describing what motivated them to make a gift to the Foundation this year. The result was a personal, heart-felt testimony of the very different reasons why Rotarians support our Foundation. Whether they gave to honor a loved one, or to meet a community need, or because of their trust in Rotary’s financial management and the impact of its areas of focus, each donor offered insight into their individual humanitarian values.

A bittersweet moment concluded the gathering when posthumous recognition was given to Ambrogio Locatelli, a long-time Rotarian who passed away just days after making a major gift to the Foundation. As recounted by his wife, Rotarian Mariangela Donà Locatelli, one of his dying wishes was for her to complete his commitment and create a named, endowed fund to support humanitarian projects. In honor of Ambrogio’s service and dedication to Rotary, the first annual Ambrogio Locatelli Award for Friendship and Solidarity was presented to Ravindran, along with a gift of 10,000 Euro to the World Fund from the The Rotary Club of Morimondo Abbazia in District 2050.

For the Locatelli family and all those present at the event, it was inspiring to witness that Rotarians, including those whom we have lost during this time, can continue to make a lasting impact in the world through their generosity to the Foundation.

Charity Navigator Recognizes Rotary Foundation

Posted on Jan 06, 2021

For the 13th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating — four stars — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.

The Foundation earned the recognition for adhering to sector best practices and executing its mission in a financially efficient way, demonstrating both strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency. Only one percent of the organizations Charity Navigator evaluates have received 13 consecutive 4-star evaluations.

"Your achievement and 4-star rating will enhance your organization’s fundraising and public relations efforts,” says Michael Thatcher, president and chief executive officer of Charity Navigator. "This exceptional designation sets the Foundation apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness."

The rating reflects Charity Navigator's assessment of how the Foundation uses donations, sustains its programs and services, and practices good governance and openness.

World Polio Day

Rotary and polio

Polio
Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated.

PolioPlus
For more than 30 years, Rotary and our partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Our PolioPlus program was the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication by vaccinating children on a massive scale. As a core partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary focuses on advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and awareness-building.

Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.

Help Us Eradicate Polio

Rotary and the Gates Foundation extend funding match for polio eradication

Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced on 22 January that their long-term fundraising partnership, which generates up to $150 million annually for polio eradication, will continue. Under the agreement, Rotary is committed to raising $50 million a year over the next three years, and each dollar will be matched with an additional two dollars by the Gates Foundation.

In a video address at the 2020 Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, Bill Gates told incoming district governors that the partnership with Rotary needs to continue.

“The Gates Foundation’s longstanding partnership with Rotary has been vital to fighting polio,” Gates said. “That’s why we’re extending our funding match, so every dollar that Rotary raises is met with two more.”

He added, “I believe that together, we can make eradication a reality.”

The funding will support polio eradication efforts such as disease surveillance, technical assistance, and operational support for immunization activities.

The partnership between Rotary and the Gates Foundation has yielded $2 billion, and Rotarians have given countless volunteer hours to fight polio since Rotary started its PolioPlus program in 1985.

Be a part of the fight to end polio and have your donation matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Visit endpolio.org to learn more and donate.

BEEF DOGS BEAT TURKEY DOGS 4-1

Posted on Apr 13, 2019
story thumbnail
The Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights once again supported "Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweep".  Almost 1,000 turkey and beef hot dogs were served along with chips and drinks.  One lesson learned is beef hot dogs are preferred over turkey hot dogs 4-1!!

In 1985, COA launched the region’s first Beach Sweeps program to rid beaches of unsightly and harmful debris.  COA's Beach Sweeps is one of the longest running cleanups of its kind in the world.  The program has grown from 75 people at one site in 1985, to over 9,000 volunteers in 2018.

I would like to invite and encourage  all Rotarians to participate in the District Conference, May 3 – 5, 2019 at the fabulous Wyndham Hotel in Gettysburg.  This celebratory event highlighting the accomplishments of the Rotary year and enables clubs to demonstrate their achievements.

This year’s theme of “GET INSPIRED AT GETTYSBURG” plays on R.I. President Barry Rassin’s theme of “BE the INSPIRATION.” We are sure that the program will keep you informed about Rotary in the world and the historic nature of the town gives you great opportunity to explore the battlefields. Moreover, we have arranged a Saturday afternoon guided tour for those who choose to participate. Seating on the buses is limited so please act fast to reserve a place.

This will be the first District Conference of our new district and we are joining with our colleagues in District 7490 (Bergen, Hudson and Passaic counties,) to make the conference a memorable event.  I hope you will consider being with us in May. Bring your family as Gettysburg lends itself to being a wonderful travel destination just a three hour drive from the center of our district.

VITTLES FOR VOLUNTEERS BY ROTARY!

SANDY HOOK, NJ – The Berkeley Heights Rotary Club and friends showed up on Saturday morning, April 21, 2018, and served vittles for the more than 850 volunteers who came out to clean the beaches there of litter of all sorts.

The Rotary Club has been doing this for over 15 consecutive years, in cooperation with Clean Ocean Action, the semi-annual cleanup of New Jersey beaches known as “Beach Sweep.” In the course of the morning, cleanup volunteers plowed through one thousand hot dogs, gallons and gallons of iced tea and water, and ten 50-pack boxes of chips and nachos—all food and drinks are provided free to these sandy stalwarts by the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club.
This year’s Beach Sweep was a huge success. The “sweepers” at Sandy Hook removed vast amounts of litter. The “top 5” were: over 9,400 discarded pieces of plastic, including a major number of plastic water bottles; 6,580 candy and food wrappers; 5,989 bottle caps and coffee cup lids; and over 7,442 straws, stirrers, and Styrofoam cups; plus one Styrofoam chunk of dock material measuring 5’x3’x2’! All this and much more in less than three hours’ time!

ONE MAN'S JOURNEY becomes a LIFE-MISSION!

Posted on Apr 05, 2018
MissionCleanWater began with the passion of one man -- James Leitner. His Life Mission: To help those without clean, accessible drinking water.

On discovering first-hand the enormous number of people in the world who don't have access to clean, drinkable water -- something we all take for granted when we simply turn on our taps -- Jim Leitner decided maybe there's a way he could make a difference, to reduce the number (it's in the tens of thousands!) of people who die each year simply because THEIR WATER KILLS THEM!

For one full year, he completed a marathon-a-month, but not like the thousands of runners we see in New York, Boston, and beyond. Jim decided to run these marathons CARRYING 5 GALLONS OF WATER (1 gallon = 8.36 lbs.) to symbolize the distance women and children must walk every day just to find water. But Jim didn't stop there. Next, he completed a walk from New Jersey to California (that's over 3,200 miles) PULLING 10 GALLONS OF WATER to symbolize the total distance a child walks in one year just to get water.

These feats of dedicated endurance helped to raise the money needed to make a real difference in the lives of people he'll never meet--but who will stay alive thanks to his efforts.

ROTARIANS SUPPORT THE WORLD

Posted on Oct 26, 2017

The Rotary Foundation is the financial "engine" for Rotarians and Rotary Clubs worldwide. The Foundation, a top-rated charity, supports Rotary's international initiatives like Polio Plus, which has been eradicating polio from the planet since 1985, as well as international and local project grants for Rotary Clubs like Berkeley Heights.

The Foundation is significantly funded by Rotarians themselves, and the members of the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club have played important roles in this for many years.

At a recent club meeting, Governor of Rotary District 7510 Robert Zeglarski, and Club President Jim Ramentol honored club members who have made continuing contributions to the Foundation via Paul Harris Fellowships (Paul Harris was one of the four founders of Rotary, in 1905).

Recognized for their ongoing support were (see photo) Bob McManus (daughter Cheri Perez accepting), Pamela Steiner, Gerry Harris, Julianne Simmons (Doris Jow accepting), George Kraemer (son George, Jr. accepting), Dolores Scott Croneberger, Laura Fuhro, Tiffany Escott, Lynn Falanga, and Linda Sausville; they are flanked left and right by Mr. Zeglarski and Mr. Ramentol. Also recognized but not pictured were Michael Shapiro and Michael Del Duca. Other Paul Harris Fellows of the club are Mary Ann Cusack and Hal Daume.

HELP ROTARY HELP TEXAS

Posted by Jim Ramentol on Aug 29, 2017
The Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights has been requested by District 7510 to participate in a Hurricane Harvey Relief Project.  We are raising money for ShelterBox.  ShelterBox has long been supported by Rotary Clubs around the world.  ShelterBoxes have provided shelter and emergency supplies for people dealing with catastrophes.

The sturdy green ShelterBoxes are designed to help people who have lost everything. They are filled with practical tools and utensils that help to create the framework for everyday life.  Each contains a family-sized tent that protects people from the elements and provides a safe space in which people can start to recover from physical and emotional trauma.   The contents differ depending on the disaster and the climate, but items such as solar lights, water storage and purification equipment, thermal blankets and cooking utensils help start the process of creating a home.

Please consider making a monetary donation toward this cause so we can have as many ShelterBoxes as possible sent to the areas affected by Harvey.  For additional details please contact Jim Ramentol at 908-216-7151 or Hal Daume at 908-447-6290.

GOVERNOR LIVINGSTON INTERACTORS RETURN FROM RYLA

Posted by Hal Daume on Jul 28, 2017

Each year, the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club sponsors two GLHS Interact student service club officers to attend RYLA. This year, the RYLA scholarships went to Rebecca Henderson and Grace Pitingolo.

Becca and Grace visited with the Berkeley Heights Rotarians at the club's regular meeting and reported on their weekend-long experience on the campus of Drew University, in Madison. The weekend, they said, was filled with icebreakers, team-building challenges, fellowship, and meeting and making new Interact and Rotary friends. "It was a more special weekend for us and for the more than forty other Interact leaders from north-central New Jersey that we could ever have imagined!" they both confirmed. RYLA--for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards--is a youth leadership development and team-building weekend held each year for 10th- and 11th-grade high school students

The Interact Club at Governor Livingston HS is jointly sponsored by the Berkeley Heights and the Mountainside Rotary Clubs. . The Interact Club at GLHS has over 250 members, making it one of the largest, and also most active, in the state, and arguably the most popular club at the high school. In addition to Rotary Club sponsorship, the Interact Club is guided by two exceptional faculty advisors: Doreen Ladinski and Sharon Leahy, both honorary members of the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club.

Berkeley Heights VFW To Speak At April 26 Meeting

Posted on Apr 19, 2017

The Berkeley Heights VFW Post has recently reinvented itself, including the formation of a new “Friends of Post 6259” support group. Next Wednesday, Post Commander Tom Lombardi and Adjutant Steve Falk will join us and give us an update on the “Friends” program and upcoming events we can support as individuals and—potentially—as a club!
Along with this, since both the Post and our Rotary Club support the VA Hospital in Lyons, we’re collecting gently used movie and TV series DVDs, and also music CDs and cassettes (we did this a couple of years ago, and they were a great hit with residents!).
Please go through your collections and bring your DVDs, CDs, and cassettes to our meeting.  We’ll label them from our Rotary Club and give them to Tom and Steve to deliver to the VA Hospital along with those they’ve collected from Post members.
Also, Linda and Jim will report on the success of this year’s “Beach Sweep” on Saturday, and we’ll have some more updates on the upcoming Rubber Ducky Festival, including new sponsors and a brand-new food provider—the Embassy Suites “Gastro Truck”!

Okay, so you've considered donating a unit of blood.  Pretty painless these days, and you get a snack to boot!  But what happens next?  Where does your blood go? Does it save lives?  How many from a single unit?  What about platelets--what are they used for?

At our next meeting, you'll meet Loretta Ferrara, of Atlantic Health Services and an expert in all things blood- and platelet-related!  We'll find out the answers to those questions, and more!

So c'mon out for a fun and educational lunch and great fellowship!  Our meetings are open to all--just come visit and meet some fabulous folks making a difference in our community (as blood donors and more!) and enjoying friendships along the way.

New Jersey's "Beach Sweep", an initiative of Clean Ocean Action, began in 1985 with just 75 volunteers at one site.  Since then it's grown immensely.  Last April over five thousand volunteers swept our beaches to rid them of unsighly and harmful debris.

For 2017, our Beach Sweep day as Sandy Hook (Beach D) is Saturday, April 22 form 9am until 12:30pm.  Gerry Harris, of the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club has been involved in Beach Sweep for over a dozen years, along with our club-sponsored Interact service club of over 100 student members from Governor Livingston High School.

Shiavo To Speak To The Rotary Club Of Berkeley Heights

Posted by Hal Daume on Feb 15, 2017

We all know how dramatically communications technology has changed in recent years… What about here, in Berkeley Heights? How are we taking advantage of these changes?

At our meeting on Wednesday, February 22nd, we’ll be joined by our town’s “communications backbone,” Nick Schiavo.  Nick is Chair of the Berkeley Heights Communications Committee. He’ll take us through the committee’s initiatives with the government, our high school’s TV studio, local businesses and community organizations, and how this committee of all volunteers is moving forward to highlight our town’s increasingly numerous activities and events. In brief, this committee has been adapting to these changes to bring clear, crisp, and timely messages to our town’s residents and key stakeholders.

The Communications Committee is now at a pivot point and is developing a strategy for the future, which Nick will takes us through, and seek our input.

Professionally, Nick is a CPA; he’s employed by a private foundation, so he knows the in’s and out’s of initiatives like this and has been tenacious in sticking with it to achieve success! (Nick’s also a tenacious racquetball player, and always brings his “A” game to the court. In the same way, he’s always brought his “A” game to township communications for nearly a decade!)

The Berkeley Heights Rotary Club is a great group of local business-people and professionals. We're here to make positive improvements in our community. We get together every two weeks for a friendly lunch and to decide what we'll tackle next. Meetings are open to anyone who'd like to roll up their sleeves for our township and its people. We support youth groups, seniors, students, and community-servers like our rescue squad, firefighters, and peace officers, plus educators, librarians, food banks, the homeless, and citizens at large. We're non-political, non-sectarian, and open to all.

Interested In Paralympics?

Posted by Hal Daume on Jan 12, 2017

Grown from a small gathering of British World War II veterans in 1948, the Paralympic Games is a major international multi-sport event involving athletes with a range of disabilities, including impaired muscle power, range of movement, limb deficiency, and even vision impairment. One of the most exciting Paralympic sport is Wheelchair Fencing.

At our next lunch-time meeting, on Wednesday, January 25th, we’re going to learn the ins and outs of this sport, from an expert!  Dr. Don DeFabio, a former competitive fencer (saber) himself, is a Paralympics technical official, specifically for Wheelchair Fencing.

He’s also served as a chiropractic doctor for the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Kona for nine years and also for USA Fencing. Dr. Don is also the Chiropractic Physician for Drew University Athletics.

At the community level he supports Our House, which provides housing and jobs for educationally and developmentally disabled adults, the Summit Area YMCA and Scouting in Berkeley Heights.

PURSES FOR PROGRESS VISITS THE BERKELEY HEIGHTS ROTARY CLUB

Posted by Hal Daume on Nov 09, 2016
On Wednesday, November 9 the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club was visited by Adriana Camunas, Kean University student and a founding member of the Rotaract student service club there, with her grass-roots idea, Purses for Progress. Adriana is collecting gently used purses and personal products for homeless women throughout northern and central New Jersey. When she discovered that many homeless women die of diseases due to lack of access to cleansing products as simple as soap and toothpaste, she made up her mind to change this. The purses and products are donated by a variety of civic organizations including many Rotary Clubs in the area. Her dad disinfects all purses first, and then Adriana fills them with small, travel-size products for cleanliness and delivers these to homeless shelters. The Berkeley Heights Rotary Club's members brought a bevy of items and purses to lend a hand, and will be collecting more for this Rotaract Club over the coming holiday season. For further information contact club member Stephanie Bakos at 908-963-9092 or sbakos@bhplnj.org. To learn more about Rotary go to BHRotary.com.

ROTARIANS FEED THE FANS

Posted on Nov 01, 2016
The Berkeley Height Rotary Club was asked to pitch in at the recent Police-Firefighter Charity Softball Game. We decided the best thing we could do was keep fans and players well-fed, hydrated, and happy. We set up our tent and served hot dogs, pizza and soft drinks, requesting only donations as the crowd saw fit. After the game, we fed the players from both brave teams free, as a way to say Thanks! The result--nearly $500 in contributions by the several hundred fans that day, plus our own donations (Rotary servers contributed, too)! All collected funds went straight to the Memorial Park Restoration Committee.

RECENT ROTARY SPEAKERS

Posted on Aug 19, 2016
Two marvelous speakers addressed our summer club meetings: Frank Hubbard on July 27 and Jim Skidmore on August 10.

Mr. Hubbard, a semi-retired Episcopalian priest and his wife reside in Berkeley Heights, but Frank serves the inner city community in Elizabeth (a part of District 7510) as a volunteer with "Reach Out And Read" (ROAR, for short). At least once a week, Frank visits the pediatric clinic at Trinitas and reads to the small children waiting to be seen. He finds often that he's the first person ever to offer a child the opportunity to hear and see a book read aloud by any adult! This has proven throughout ROAR's service area to make a significant difference in young children's affinity to books and in early reading skills. (PHOTO: Frank Hubbard; Linda Sausville; Lisa Liss, Director of Volunteer Services- Trinitas)

Mr. Skidmore, a resident of Berkeley Heights for over 50 years, is Vice President of Blue Bay Technologies, a privately held cybersecurity consultancy providing services to businesses, corporations, government agencies, and the U.S. Military. His talk, promoted in advance, drew New Providence resident and DHS Director, Dr. Mitchell Erickson, and a lively exchange of ideas, insights, and speculations for what the future of "cyberspace" might look like unfolded. "Reach Out and Read" (ROR) visits
Berkeley Heights Rotarians

Posted by Hal Daume on Aug 01, 2016

Frank Hubbard, Berkeley Heights resident and ROR volunteer, along with Lisa Liss, Director of Volunteer Services for Trinitas, visited the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club to describe what ROR is and has accomplished in the 27 years since its founding.

ROR is an American not-for-profit organization that advocates for and promotes childhood literacy through a network of active, hands-on volunteers like Frank Hubbard across nearly five thousand pediatric clinics across the U.S. Trinitas is a major sponsor of this work in its New Jersey service area; Frank is one of the volunteers who regularly visit Trinitas's Elizabeth clinic, where they will offer donated children's books to families and--most important--offer to read to the children right here in the waiting room!

Frank, a semi-retired Episcopalian priest, loves his new "job," and it showed in his smile and the twinkle in his eyes as he related personal stories, often involving introducing a toddler or small child to their very first adult-read book! He has also helped bi-lingual parents use children's books to help improve their newly acquired English. The Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights meets regularly at The Chimney Rock Inn, 342 Valley Road in Gillette. Meetings are from 12 Noon to 1:30 pm sharp, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays each month (major holidays excepted). Meetings, which include lunch ($20 cash or check, please), are open to all. Another Successful Rubber Duck Festival Complete! Thank you!!!

On a weather-perfect Saturday afternoon, thousands of "adopted" rubber duckies raced breathlessly down the Passaic River for prizes on June 11th, as the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club celebrated their 13th Annual Rubber Ducky Race & Festival at the Passaic River Park in Berkeley Heights.

Drawing a crowd of over a thousand spectators and participants, this event has become an annual mainstay for Berkeley Heights and neighboring townships. Admission, as always, was free. In addition to the famous race, guests enjoyed displays and booths from commercial exhibitors including the Chimney Rock Inn, eMedical Urgent Care, Master Kim's Talium Taekwondo,
Power Home Remodeling, and Tri-State Improvements/Gutter Protection Co.
Not-for-profit local groups represented were the Berkeley Heights Library, Volunteer Rescue Squad, and YMCA. Hot pizza and hand-made sandwiches this year came from Clemente’s Pizza. This event also offered a “dunk tank” and games for kids from two to ninety-two. The “bounce house” was donated once again by the Taylor Rental owner and past Rotary Club President, Paul Neuwirth. Music and announcements were provided by teen “DJ Infinite.” The Berkeley Heights Fire department brought one of their bigger firefighting trucks, which kids could climb on and “inspect” close-up. The BH Police Department provided personal on-site safety.

This event directly benefitted Berkeley Heights Boy Scout Troops 68 and 368, and Cub Scout Pack 368; Millington Troop 56, New Providence Senior Citizens, and the Suburban Chambers of Commerce. Net funds generated by this event are also used by the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club throughout the coming year for the benefit of in-town organizations such as the Volunteer Rescue Squad, Police Department, and the Memorial Park Renewal Committee. Funds from this event also underwrite the scholarships the Rotary Club gives to graduating Governor Livingston High School students, the Berkeley Heights Educational Foundation, and student dictionaries for every Berkeley Heights third-grader. The Rotary Club also contributes directly to community service projects undertaken by local Scouts in their quest for Eagle Scout—the nationally recognized highest rank in Boy Scouting.

In addition to these local contributions and initiatives, the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club also contributes annually to the Polio Plus initiative of Rotary International. This initiative, begun by Rotary Clubs world-wide in 1985, is relentlessly eradicating polio throughout the world—over the past 31 years Rotary Clubs and partners in this endeavor have reduced new cases of polio worldwide from over 350,000 men, women, and children every year prior to 1985 to a mere 20, in just two remaining countries, in 2016 to date.

Top prize for the fastest duck this year was a Weber Spirit gas grill. Other top prizes included gift cards to Delicious Heights Restaurant, Trap Rock Restaurant, and the Chimney Rock Inn.

This year's Platinum Sponsor was the soon-to-open Embassy Suites hotel, owned and managed by Hilton and the Connell Companies. Additional major sponsors included Cornerstone Analytics, Door Boy, Investors Bank, Taylor Rental, and TAPinto.net (formerly The Alternative Press.net).

BERKELEY HEIGHTS DUCKIES GETTING READY TO SWIM!

As the final step before the annual Rubber Ducky Race  for thousands of rubber duckies, members of the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club are numbering each ducky to correspond with an "adoption ticket" purchased throughout the community over the past several weeks. The ducks will race down the river immediately behind the Passaic River Park soccer fields (161 Springfield Avenue, Berkeley Heights) on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to the ducky race, families can enjoy a Moon Walk "bounce house," kids' games, a Scout-O-Rama, Car Show, and hot food from Clemente's of Berkeley Heights. Admission is free. A variety of commercial and non-profit exhibitors will be on the fields, and a local Taekwondo Dojo will put on an martial arts show. Music this year is provided by a local DJ.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ROTARY!

In the spirit of the season, members of the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club this year "adopted" a hard-working family of eight and a temporarily homeless gentleman, all to receive needed personally-purchased gifts. For each person, Rotary Club "teams" of two members each purchased correctly-sized apparel, all gift-wrapped and labeled by name.

"RESUSCI ANNE 2" FINDS A HOME IN BERKELEY HEIGHTS

The Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad has for years trained their own members, students, and the community on the most current life-saving CPR techniques. But in time, their training manikin became worn to the point of unusability. That's how the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club got involved, and helped solve this problem. Using the Rotary Club's own resources, plus grant funds from Rotary District 7510, the club purchased a brand-new state-of-the-art manikin for the Rescue Squad--"Resusci Anne 2"--which the squad will begin using right after the first of the coming year in their ongoing community outreach training schedule.  As an integral aspect of the grant, the Rescue Squad will be training all Rotary Club members, and then the program will continue on a community-wide basis.

HOW TO SPELL THANKSGIVING

Shortly before Thanksgiving this year, members of the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club gave every third-grader in our township's three elementary schools a Student Dictionary.  This is the tenth consecutive year the Rotary Club has done this, which means that the very first recipients are now in college or pursuing post-high school careers.

The one question club members ask that gets the most hands in the air and accompanying smiles is, "How many of you students have an older brother or sister who's told you what's going to happen this morning?"  And the most popular item the students want to find right away is "the longest word in the English Language"--it's 1,909 letters long, so look it up (we can't print it here because it would make this article way too long!).

The books the Rotary Club gives each student are more than just "dictionaries." In addition to their 35,000 words and definitions, they also include weights and measures, a periodic table of the elements, ASL and Braille, the American Declaration of Independence and Constitution, information about each of the 50 U.S. states, and much, much more.

For more information about the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club visit BHRotary.com or call 908-447-6290. The club holds open lunch meetings on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month at The Chimney Rock Inn, 342 Valley Road in Gillette. Visitors and visiting Rotarians are always welcome.

Berkeley Heights Rotary Club Receives
Rotary Foundation Recognitions

Posted by Hal Daume

The Rotary Foundation is the contributing arm of Rotary International, responsible for providing world-wide grants for multiple club humanitarian projects and the backbone of the "Polio Plus" global eradication initiative now in its 30th successful year. Each year, the Foundation recognizes local clubs that have made extraordinary contributions. The Berkeley Heights Rotary Club, a recipient in past years, has this year received four specific recognitions. Berkeley Heights is fourth-highest among 39 clubs in the five New Jersey counties of Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset, and Union, in average per-member Foundation contributions. The Club also received recognitions for contributing more than $1,500 to the "End Polio Now" initiative, contributing at least $100 per member to the "EREY--Every Rotarian-Every Year" program, and the "!00% Sustaining Member" award for each member contributing at least $100 to the Foundation's Annual Fund.  These recognitions place the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club among the top 5% of all 34,200 Rotary Clubs worldwide.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS ROTARY CLUB SUPPORTS LOCAL FOOD BANK FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Posted by Hal Daume

In response to an urgent request by the Berkeley Heights Food Pantry, managed by volunteers at the Church of the Little Flower, the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club dedicated this year's 35th Annual Pancake Breakfast to that need.  On Saturday, November 7th, members of the club plus Interact Club students from Governor Livingston High School (sponsored by the Rotary Club) and the Boy Scouts of Troops 68 and 368 (also sponsored by the Rotary Club) held one of its most successful breakfasts ever.  This year, there was no set "price" for the breakfasts.  Instead, the breakfasts were actually free to all who came, with voluntary donations of any amount welcomed with warm smiles and thanks.  As a result, with the Rotary Club absorbing all expenses, the Club donated 100% of the more than $3,000 in gross proceeds received.

Pam Steiner Honored

Posted on Oct 08, 2015
On Wednesday evening, October 7 our own Pam Steiner was honored at the 10th Annual Good Scout Award Dinner which was held at the Primavera Regency in Stirling.  Congratulations Pam!

From the event program:

Having never lived further than she could walk to her mother's home, Pam Steiner has been involved with youth and our regional community since her days at Jonathan Dayton Regional High School.  As a staff member of the local Chamber of Commerce she had the opportunity to meet many of the Berkeley Heights residents when she helped initiate and run the one-ring tent Circus in town, wait in the snow and cold at the horse and carriage rides during the holiday season, serve hot chocolate and cookies at Santa's arrival, and help organize the annual Clean Communities Clean Up Day.

A Rotarian since 1991, Pam represented the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce on the initial Rubber Ducky committee with the Boy Scouts many years ago.  She chairs the placemat committee for the Rotary Club's annual Pancake Breakfast and has served as club president three times.  She has also been involved with the Rotary District 7510 as an Assistant Governor two times and serving on the Eat, Drink and Share committee for many years as well as chairing that committee the past two years.  Eat, Drink and Share is a fundraiser for the Rotary International Foundation, which for the past few years has raised $35,000 annually for international projects.

Pam is a member of the Church & Cannon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and serves as the Ways and Means Chair and corresponding Secretary.

Beach Sweep 2015

Posted by Hal Daume
Here are some photos of our great folks having a blast! A thousand hot
dogs, six or seven dozen turkey dogs, and several dozen veggie burgers,
all cooked to perfection and not a one left over!

The "Top Award" for clever goes to Tracy!  When we ran out of buns, she
grabbed a bunch of juice cups and shouted,' "Come n' get 'em! Hot dog
in-a-cup!"  And people did!  :-))

Meanwhile, Jim Ramentol invented a "hot dog escapee guard"-- kept those
little devils from trying to sneak over the side and scamper away unnoticed.

Others helping out were Linda, Hal, Julianne and Tom!

What a great morning!!!

Rotary Sponsors Students

Posted on Jan 08, 2015
For the 9th consecutive year, Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights members gave special Student Dictionaries to all 3rd graders at the Hughes, Mountain-Park, and Woodruff Schools in Berkeley Heights.  The students, many of whom have older brothers and sisters who have received these in prior years, happily looked forward to their own "Literary Birthday Presents" this week (see photo). "Doing the math" tells us that, to date the Club has given these dictionaries to some 3,000 students at no cost to them, the schools, or the township.

The Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights is a group of local businesspeople and professionals with three objectives: Fellowship, Networking, and Serving the Community. Now in its 49th year of service, the Rotary Club meets for lunch at the nearby Chimney Rock Inn on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. Meetings are open, and anyone can visit. For more information the visit Club's website at BHRotary.com or call 908-447-6290. During the interim time, club members enjoy a social event one week and a service project on the other.

In addition to these annual dictionaries, in 2014 the Club "adopted" an inner city family of six for the Holiday Season, complete with gifts for all; continued to support some 200 solo seniors with our 23 year-old Medic-Alert program; presented four $1,000 scholarships to Governor Livingston graduating seniors; continued supporting 7 Scouting units with over 250 boys and young men; made 12 significant donations to Little Flower's food bank; supported the annual 5k charity run-walk and the Y's Mothers Day 5k; supported the Berkeley Heights Street Fair for its second year; gave 16 personal DVD players and over 150 DVD movies to the residents of the Lyons VA Hospital; gave brand-new World Book Encyclopedia sets to every Berkeley Heights school; and, when the town's Recreation Department needed more chairs for meetings and events, we answered that call, too.
