Feature Story
Wilkinson K-Kids Donation for Sarasota Y Youth Shelter
The K-Kids club members, grades 3-5, chose to help foster children in our area by collecting donations for the Sarasota Y Youth Shelter. Mr. Renick, director of the Youth Shelter came and gave the K-Kids an overview of the shelter and items that are appreciated for use there. The club members went on the Wilkinson morning news in their K-Kids T-shirts and told the school about their project.

The K-Kids made donation boxes and placed them around the school by classrooms, the media center, the cafeteria, and the front office. Donations were made by school staff, students, organizations and volunteers. The club members went on the Wilkinson morning news in their K-Kids T-shirts and told the school about their project.

The K-kids then collected the donation boxes and sorted items as follows:
  • Arts and Crafts – 1 Medium box
  • Toys- 1 Large box + 3 cases of matchbox cars
  • Books- 1 Large box (+ 1 small box for Wilkinson’s Spring Book Fair)
  • Clothes- 4 Large boxes
  • Bath/Hygiene items- 1 Large box + toilet paper packages
  • Baby toys- 1 Large bag
  • Baby items – 1 Large box + 2 Large bags of baby diapers
A big thank you goes to the K-kids who planned and managed this donation project and to all those who gave to the cause. Thank you to Mr. Irish, our Kiwanis advisor, for his ideas and enthusiasm and the Siesta Key Kiwanis Club for their support and generosity.
