MORE INFORMAITON:   Doernbecher – Bowling with Heart event

On February 26, 2023 friends and families from Oregon and Southwest Washington will come together at Big Al’s
in Beaverton, Oregon for the 8th Annual Bowling with Heart Bowl-A-Thon. This event will feature team bowling,
prizes, and a silent auction. Proceeds from the event help make a substantial impact in the lives of the children
that make over 200,000 visits to Doernbecher every year.

At our 2022 event, Bowling with Heart was able to raise over $75,000 for Doernbecher with the help of
organizations like yours. Funds raised from this year’s event will support the Friends of Doernbecher Grant
Program. Each year the Friends of Doernbecher Grant Program awards between $100,000 to $200,000 to OHSU
and Doernbecher faculty and staff seeking funding for clinical and research projects and programs at OHSU
Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

For 19 years, the grant program has provided seed-stage funding for OHSU and Doernbecher faculty and staff to
pursue relevant and impactful projects that directly benefit patients and families. These projects also assist in
securing longer-term grants from the National Institutes of Health or other sources. The Friends of Doernbecher
grant program has funded 78 research projects since its inception in 2003.

Research proposals funded in 2022 include: Developing osteosarcoma model to assist in predicting drug response
for personalized medicine; Improve & Implement additional rural EMS training for vulnerable babies born out-of-
hospital; Study speech development/understandability after cleft palate surgery for better treatment strategies
and improved outcomes; Study Adolescents with Scoliosis comparing HRQL surgery outcomes with patient SRS-22
questionnaire to determine necessity of surgeries; Study to improve clinical care for sleep disorder pediatric
patients for more accurate diagnosis and management.
