As incoming governor of the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Kiwanis District, I was looking for a different kind of Governor’s Project, one that we could do with all of our Kiwanis clubs. It needed to tick several boxes:
  • Something clubs can do when money is tight;
  • Something impactful in each Kiwanis community;
  • Something which serves children (of course);
  • Something which affords clubs the opportunity to do service safely, while social distancing; and
  • Something that is fun!
I asked a friend of mine, former Green Bay Packers strong safety LeRoy Butler, if he had any ideas. He immediately answered, “Cops ‘N Kids”! I asked him to tell me more. Cops ‘N Kids promotes children’s literacy and also community trust in law enforcement. The goal of Cops ‘N Kids is to improve the reading skills of children by introducing them to the adventure and creativity that comes from reading. For the Kiwanis ‘N Cops ‘N Kids program, local clubs work with the police department in their communities.
The Cops 'N Kids programs was founded by Racine police officer Julia Witherspoon. A passion for reading inspired her to change careers nearly 20 years ago. By changing careers, she’s transformed the lives of countless kids.  The mission of Kiwanis is to improve the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis is excited for this new partnership.

LeRoy was excited to do this with Kiwanis and said, “Together, we are going to Leap Over Literacy and jump into Cops ‘N Kids as a team. It will take a team to conquer literacy.” I couldn’t agree more!
