Rotary Club of Winnipeg Charleswood - Annual Christmas Party

The gathering began with a cocktail hour, featuring appetizers (kindly sponsored by Morris Insurance), music featuring Elation Pauls on violin and Liudmyla Tereshchenko on keyboards, and photos Rod Delisle (thank you!).

President Glenn Campbell commenced the meeting, introducing himself as the Club President, 2022-2023. He recognized and thanked the musical duo who then helped with the singing of O'Canada. Following the land acknowledgement, President Glenn gave a special welcome to those attending in an official capacity: newly elected City Councillor for Charleswood, Evan Duncan and wife Courtney; Honorary member, MLA for Charleswood and Speaker of the Manitoba Legislature, Myrna Driedger and husband Hal; and Principal, Westgrove School Shannon Shields and husband Dave Ellis. President, Board of Directors, Breezy Bend Golf Club, Shannon Obrien and his wife Wilma sent regrets due to illness.

Mike Dudar, Sargent at Arms went table to table welcoming and introducing guests. Some of the special attendees included guests of the Bridge of Hope Ukraine project: the Variasov family (Dima and Kate and children, Dima Jr. and Timothy and Kate's mother Laura); Jane and her daughter Marislava and immigration lawyer Nalini Reddy and her husband Brad Regher. A big thank you to Nalini for her exceptional work to get the Variasov family to Canada!

There were a good number of Happy Bucks, an Anniversary (Jim and Lorraine Forestell) and birthday (Iain Scott). Councillor Evan Duncan thanked the Club for the invitation and to all for their patience in city snow removal.

President Glenn presented a gift to Jack Wilson, Chair, Assiniboine Forest Committee. The plaque stated "May the Forest be With You". Thank you to donor Nancy Morris.

Following dinner and fellowship, President Glenn invited Shannon Shields to speak about Westgrove School. This is her first year as Principal of Westgrove and Shannon was delighted to learn about the school's partnership with the Charleswood Rotary Club. She hilighted the garden program, book purchases, food/ clothing donations, and enhancements planned for the playground.

Club Secretary, Past Club President and Past District Governor Jim Forestell awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship to Cory Johnson, General Manager, Breezy Bend Golf and Country Club. Cory has always been supportive of the Club, including during COVID, providing greater flexibility to plan our meetings. The Club has always been welcomed at Breezy Bend. It is our home. Following Jim's remarks, Cory came forward to accept the Paul Harris certificate and pin. President Glenn offered congratulations adding that the Club's B.O.D. unanimously approved the motion to recognize Cory. An online video interview featuring Cory reveals that he is a talented golfer, who rarely has time to golf because of work demands. His work ethic is well known to all.

Muriel Sutherland circulated trivia questions and explained the rules. Each table spent a few minutes completing the answers. The winning group had correct answers for all except one. President Glenn thanked Muriel and participants. He also recognized the last place team.

Iain Scott came forward to tell a Scottish Story, based on the 12 Days of Christmas. Iain's authentic delivery was extremely entertaining, earning him a well-deserved round of applause.

Santa Claus arrived making a special stop at our party. He sought out children in attendance, some of whom hid under their tables (not for long) and he gave each a present. Santa handed out candy to all and a stuffed potato tree ornament to President Glenn. Santa then left to continue with his busy schedule. Thank you Santa!

Chuck Crocker thanked Breezy Bend cooking and serving staff for their splendid work throughout the year. They came out of the kitchen to be recognized. We always enjoy our meals and the service at Breezy Bend!

President Glenn thanked the party planning committee. He gave a special thank you to Lorraine Forestell, who got the ball rolling and worked continuously to plan a successful event. As well, everyone in the room was thanked for attending and donating to the socks and food campaign.

President Glenn was unable to play a video featuring the club for the year 2022. He promised to include a link in the Bulletin.

President Glenn ended the program saying "May the beauty of the season bring you joy; may the spirit of the season bring you peace. All our very best wishes to each of you for a healthy and happy 2023!!"
