Our speaker was Sandy (Trick Shot Sandy) Kurceba. He brought along a big bag of clubs, and talked about his career as a PGA pro.
Sandy comes from a sports dynasty. His dad was a hockey and baseball player, and was besties with Terry Sawchuk. Sandy’s Uncle John won every major championship in hockey from 1936-1947.
At 15 years old, Sandy shot the course record at Breezy, a 65. (I could do that on the first hole.) Sandy is part of a family full of athletes, all in the Hall of Fame. Sandy got into the Hall of Fame by paying twenty bucks.
He played hockey with the Brandon Wheat Kings but hockey players only got paid for five months then, so a summer job was needed. This is no longer the case. So he hung up his skates and moved to golf.
Following a six year apprenticeship to turn pro he moved from Glendale, to Rossmere to Niakwa and Southwood. Sandy married a girl from Australia and went to play golf there. In Australia golf is played year round, and brings in superstars from around the world. After four years down under, without receiving a pay cheque, Sandy came home to Tuxedo and spent five years learning to play golf. He played full-time from 1981-87, and he got cheques. While entertaining at Breezy, he learned trick shots.
Sandy also entertained at Rossmere dance parties, with trick shots learned from ‘Wedgie.’ At 50 years of age he went back to the seniors’ tour. He had clubs built and began marketing his golf show. He performed wearing skates, combining hockey with golf. And he sometimes made a better cheque than 1st place in a golf tournament. His biggest audience was 45,000.
Sandy told us that it was a fun journey, and he had the opportunity to play with the best players on the tour. Sandy (a legend in his own mind) was a very entertaining speaker.
