Meeting Report

President Glenn began the meeting with the customary Land Acknowledgment.

President Glenn read an email sent by Lorraine to members on Sunday:

“It is with deep regret that we have to inform you that our dear friend and fellow Rotarian, Darvin Jasper, passed away peacefully on Saturday. He was surrounded by his family in his own home.  More details will follow later with the arrangements etc.”

We have now learned from Sharon that the service for Darvin will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, at the Viscount Gort. Sharon will be posting a notice in the newspaper.

All were asked to rise, if able, to sing O Canada.

Rotary Moment: President Glenn recognized President Elect Iain Scott who has been working hard to not only recruit guest speakers for our weekly meetings, but is also encouraging members to invite guests. It is an effective way to promote our club to non-members, who might consider becoming Rotarians. We welcome new members who can bring additional skills and experience to our service to the community and internationally. For the guests joining us today, please don’t be shy about asking questions and returning to future meetings. We are very pleased to have you here and trust that you will enjoy the program and fellowship.

Chair Announcements:

The Board of Directors will meet by Zoom, on October 7th at 4:30 pm.

Mandy reported that there has been no meaningful progress on the Ukraine Project, and noted that due to the increasing cost of supporting the family awaiting immigration, it may be necessary to consider another fundraiser.

WGI Westman

Iain introduced Russ Edwards, owner of WGIWestman Group Inc. As Russ turned 89 years of age yesterday, the club sang Happy Birthday to him. Russ entertained us so well with the story of his life journey that he received a standing ovation. To learn more about Russ’s life and his companies, visit www.westmangroup.com.

Chuck thanked Russ for his presentation.

Sarges Corner

Due to the high number of guests in attendance, Acting Sarge Lyle asked guests to introduce themselves. Most were from the Westman Group, and we also welcomed Raman, president of Winnipeg West Rotary.

Happy Bucks

Rod, Ed Toews, Ed Gramiak, and Chuck shared happy memories of Darvin’s time with Charleswood Rotary. Darvin will be greatly missed.

Cathy was happy that her friend Raman came to our meeting.

Guest Len was happy that his 100 year old father recovered quickly from Covid19.

50/50

The 50/50 draw was one by a guest from Westman, who drew the lucky blue marble. He declined the winnings (over $100!) and asked that it be returned to the pot.

Fines

President Glenn was fined for not calling Sarge’s table to the buffet early enough in the queue.

Bob Eilers was fined for wearing his name tag upside down.

Next week

Fred Wright, District Governor, will join us to talk about happenings at the district level, and challenges that our club is facing.
