President David Soper opened the meeting with our land acknowledgement, and the singing of O Canada. Chair announcements David, LeeAnn and Cathy attended the Zone Summit last week. It was an excellent learning and networking event. Be sure to ask them about their experiences Jack Wilson asked for volunteers to distribute Forest pamphlets in their neighbourhoods. Jack also reported that the Forest has just received a $25,000 donation. This news was greeted with enthusiastic applause. On behalf of Glenn (Youth Chair) Lloyd, LeeAnn and David S. went to the airport to see our outward bound exchange student, Adele, off to France. Sarge’s Corner Sarge introduced our guest and speaker, Maggie Cramb Happy Bucks Ed Thompson was pleased that Grass Roots Peacekeeping member, Matt, has been appointed by RI to be on the UN board. Nick recently returned from a one week vacation in Toronto that he enjoyed very much. While there, he attended a meeting with the Rotary Club of Mississauga West. President David was two bucks worth of happy that the technology is working for tonight’s presentation. (And it only took four people to make that happen.) Chuck was happy that when he attended a Jet’s game, he found that the Carvery had been moved back down to the second level. Birthdays Lorraine had a birthday and we sang to her. Enthusiastically, if not well. Speaker This evening’s speaker, Maggie Cramb, was introduced by Caroline Wild. Caroline and Iain came across Maggie and her project on Canada Day, while walking around The Forks. Caroline and Iain came across the group of hardworking gardeners and a conversation started. They connected this work to that at the Assiniboine Forest. Maggie is completing an undergrad degree in Engineering and a Masters degree in Architecture. She comes from Vancouver, and is a lifelong gardener. Maggie: Woven Relations is a project that has been going since March. The group involved noted that Canadian landscaping is primarily European, and they wanted to bring an Indigenous lens to it. The garden is located near the CMHR. It includes garden beds and planters, as well as seating near the middle and is approximately 30 metres wide. Growing well are the three sisters: corn, beans and squash. Rabbits ate the sunflowers. Maggie observed that the team was mostly made up of women. The project is approved as a two-year installation, but the group is advocating for it to be continued for a third year. The garden uses cedar in the garden boxes, and contains sacred medicines. Cathy said that she had been asked by the district nominating committee to take on this role, and she is excited to do so. Cathy then left the room so that the vote could be held. It was moved by Jim Forestell and seconded by Chuck Crocker, that Winnipeg-Charleswood Rotary Club nominate Past President Cathy Skene to the position of District Governor Nominee. The motion was carried unanimously. Sarge Mike 50/50 draw. Chuck had the lucky ticket but did not draw the elusive blue marble.
