There was a great turn out of Rotarians and friends at last Friday's Drought Relief Fundraiser held at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds. It was great to see our three community service organisations of Rotary, Lions and Zonta combining forces for this cause.
The evening held lots of variety and Community Service Director, Alec reported that the organisers were very satisfied with all aspects of this event. Some 200 patrons attended and engaged the evening with a generous spirit and a cheerful disposition. Andrew Finlay and James Lister gave thoughtful opening addresses that set the tone of the evening. Ann Lindsay in her usual efficient manner as MC did a sterling job. David Schnitzerling embraced his job as auctioneer with irresistible charm and extracted top dollars for the 10 items that went under the hammer. Morwenna Harslett got the patrons concentrating in an enjoyable hour of trivia. Tracey and Helen Gosney filled the gaps and kept all the electrics working. All these people donated their time to the cause! Kate Cook also entertained with her music.
In the background, the Ringmaster’s Cafe, Lions and Snowflakes Bar provided food and drinks in a cheerful and efficient manner. They plan to donate all their profits to the cause. We must not forget the Show Society who provided the venue free of charge..
Our biggest sponsor was McDonalds who put $1000 towards the event. The Border Post ran big adds in three papers and this was done without charge.
We expect the profit to be over $15000 and when this is finalised the money will be sent to the Chanel 9, National Farmers and Rotary RAWCS Drought Appeal. The money will be disbursed to NSW and QLD drought victims. I believe that this fund is now approaching $20mill..
Thanks must go to Bendigo Bank and their staff for collecting and processing the ticket money. A special thanks to all the prize and auction goods donors, many of whom were local businesses who are also doing it tough during the drought and are often forgotten.
