Police Assistant Commissioner - on Domestic Violence

Over a 32 year policing career with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Brian has experienced a wide variety of policing roles across general duties, investigations, covert policing, intelligence, education & training, disaster/emergency management and incident command.

As a Detective, he performed investigative duties within the Juvenile Aid Bureau, Metropolitan Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), Sex Offenders Squad, Woolloongabba CIB and State Drug Squad before moving into covert surveillance and intelligence duties with the Bureau of Criminal Intelligence, Queensland.

He was appointed as Inspector in Charge of the Qld Police College, Chelmer in 1998 where he led a team responsible for the development and delivery of nationally recognised Advanced Diplomas in both Investigations and Intelligence Practice. In 2001 he was appointed Superintendent in charge of the Qld Police Academy campuses at Oxley and Townsville guiding the training for the (then) largest sustained recruiting period in QPS history achieving the milestone of 10000 police officers by 2006.

In 2008, Brian moved to the dynamic and diverse Operations Support Command where he initially led the Communications Branch and from 2010 commanded the Specialist Response Branch comprising the Service’s high risk and terrorism response units including the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), the Explosives Ordnance Response Team and the Negotiators Coordination Unit.

In 2011, Brian was appointed Assistant Chair to the State Disaster Coordination Group during the devastating Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi disasters during which he operated as part of the multi-agency team based at the State Disaster Coordination Centre. This experience included the immediate response to the Toowoomba and Grantham flood emergencies.

Brian was appointed as Detective Chief Superintendent at the Crime & Misconduct Commission (CMC) in 2011 where he led the CMC’s major and organised crime investigative operations as Director, Crime Operations. In 2013 he was appointed as Operations Commander, Internal Investigations Group, Ethical Standards Command.

In 2015 Brian was seconded to the position of State Disaster Recovery Coordinator by the Premier where he worked across government departments, agencies and community groups throughout Central Queensland to coordinate recovery efforts after the impact of Tropical Cyclone Marcia.

He was appointed to his current position as Assistant Commissioner, South Eastern Region

Brian’s holds undergraduate qualifications in Human Resource Management and Intelligence Practice, and postgraduate qualifications in Further Education & Training and Leadership/Management. He completed the inaugural ANZ Police Leadership Strategy Program with the Australian Institute of Police Management in 2014.
