Congratulations to our 2015 recipients of the $1,500 Rotary Service above Self Scholarships!
By Jennifer Lavier Jankovic, Williams Engineering Canada, Rotary Corporate Member

Congratulations to Western Canada High School alumni Karina Juma, and Aleeza Manucot who were nominated by their teachers based on their academic achievements and volunteerism. I had the pleasure of meeting these inspiring young ladies and presenting the awards on behalf of RCC at the Awards night at the school on June 4, 2015.

Karina attributes her parents for instilling the value of volunteerism in her. While at WCHS she organized fundraisers and awareness-raising campaigns for many organizations including: Free the Children, Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, Anti-Bullying, Alberta Children’s Hospital, etc. This month Karina has begun a Joint Honours Bachelor in Social Science in History and Political Science at the University of Ottawa. She wishes to thank the club for their support!

Aleeza similarly championed for many causes and was “honored to be recognized, as one who possesses attributes that are worthy of this award”. Her dream is to become a pediatrician and work with Doctors overseas, perhaps in her family’s homeland of the Phillipines. She is taking the next step to achieving her dream and has begun the BSCH Arts & Science Program at Queens University. Support, such as provided by the club, will allow her to ‘continue bettering herself so that she can extend the positive impact she is making here and around the globe’.
Alberta Culture Days- FREE CONCERT
By Manon Mitchell

Hear the Calgary Civic Symphony IN CONCERT on Sunday, September 27th at the Alexandra Centre Society (where the Civic rehearses each Monday evening). The Civic Symphony will be performing a short 30-minute concert including the "Finale" from Sibelius’ Symphony and excerpts from Star Wars. Players from the Civic Symphony will be performing in local Inglewood businesses from 1:30 - 2:30 pm. So come and shop while being entertained. Our own Rotarian Manon Mitchell will be performing at Kent of Inglewood (Kent Of Inglewood, 1319 9 Ave SE). Following the free concert there is an open rehearsal where you can hear what it takes to put all of this together. For it’s 40th anniversary the Civic commissioned local composer Dr. Alan Bell to write a work for the Civic. Dr. Bell will be in attendance and speak a bit about his composition.
