The Meeting March 18, 2016
By Ralph Lundberg

Before Rotarians and guests could make it into the Crystal Ballroom, they had to get by this week’s greeter Greg Stevenson, who did double duty as he delivered the invocation.  A spirited march in led by Manon on violin and Michael on keyboard enabled the head table people to make their way through the crowd.

Lorne Larsen gave an update on our Adult Literacy program which has established an innovative Newcomers Club, a collaboration with Bow Valley College and the Public Library.

Visitor Aaron Sanderson gave a stirring presentation on the efforts of War Child, the only international organization focused on children in war zones.  The emphasis is on giving children access to education, work opportunity and a level of justice that allows the first two conditions to be met.  Of the 60 million displaced people in war zones, half are children in countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan and Jordan.  Ninety seven per cent of War Child’s workers are local people from the affected countries.

Rotary Exchange students Vito Jankov from Croatia and Annina Arvo from Finland took the podium to promote the Youth Exchange International Dinner April 9th where you will be treated to traditional desserts from the home countries of the students…made by students !
Ken Moraes reported that the Lake Louis ski bus was nearly full and Rob Brookwell presented Jennifer Lavier, our new Grants Director, who has completed all the acivities required of new members and has consequently seen the red dot removed from her name tag.

A lively auction of a Rotary soccer ball ensued.  Manon Mitchell recruited Frank Hall, our Club’s auctioneer par excellence, to conduct the bidding war, with proceeds going to our Syrian Refugee Program.  A delighted Ali Gursoy was the successful bidder.
