Global permaculture ambassador and humanitarian Morag Gamble is the CEO of the Ethos Foundation (https://ethosfoundation.org.au) Ethos Foundation is a registered charity supporting free access to permaculture education across refugee settlements in East Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania). The foundation supports the creation of permaculture education centres, distribution of tools and seeds for home kitchen gardens, and the development of resilient food gardens in schools and on commons.

Last year Ethos Foundation was able to support 1500 refugees to access full permaculture training. There are now learning hubs in 11 camps and communities and numerous livelihood initiatives forming - from vegetable production, mushroom production and solar drying, compost making, egg and chicken program, community piggeries, soap-making and supporting local seamstress to make washable sanitary pads.

The permaculture courses held are led by local people mentored by Morag and the local team and particularity support youth and women to address the rapidly growing issues of hunger, malnutrition and abject poverty. Refugees live with trauma and desperation. Permaculture skills assist in the creation of their livelihoods, and skills them up to redesign their places if they are able to return home, or if they land in a new place.

Morag is delighted to have the opportunity to speak about the work of the Ethos Foundation in East Africa with refugee youth and women and looks forward to meeting you all soon.
