Flying Samaritan Interact Fundraiser

Casa Roble's Interact Club is about to launch "Backpacks for Baja", a fundraiser for the Flying Samaritans. After hearing Chris Nelson's presentation to our Rotary Club last month about the medical, dental, optical and educational assistance they offer to farm workers and their families in rural Baja, I invited him to speak to the Interact Club March 24.  The Interact members were very inspired by this humanitarian program and as a result will be holding a collection campaign at Casa Roble from April 13-24.  We invite Rotarians, Inner Wheel members, friends and neighbors to donate any of the following needed items:

toothbrushes, toothpaste, sunglasses, educational supplies (crayons, pencils, pens, notebooks, books etc), sample sizes of shampoo, hand lotion (hotel size). band aids, hair brushes.

Chris will be sending me a sample of the simple cloth bag (backpack/purse) that they give to the mothers and children to hold the small gifts they receive when they visit the medical clinic set up the 2nd Saturday of the month by the Flying Samaritans.  His wife makes 200 bags a month-- and would welcome any bags we might also make for the cause!

Chris will be coming to our April 28 Interact meeting to receive all of the donations we will have collected by then.  I hope to surprise him with a "mountain" of donations!!

Please bring your donations to the Rotary meetings in the next few weeks!

Investing in the future of Orangevale youth continues to be a top priority of the Orangevale Rotary Club. Following a fine Orangevale Rotary tradition, $3500 was again designated to fund worthy educational grant projects submitted by Orangevale schools. Educational grant applications were sent out in early October and six teachers sent in their applications by the October 31 deadline. Out of the six grant proposals, five were approved and funded. All grant recipients have been invited to attend a November or December Rotary meeting to meet the very generous Rotarians and describe how the funds will be spent.

ROTARY’S SUMMER LEADERSHIP CAMP

ROTARY’S SUMMER LEADERSHIP CAMP:  A life-changing experience!

Orangevale Rotary Club invests in the education and future of local youth in so many ways! Dictionaries for all third graders, educational grants for teachers, essay and speech contests, Rotary Youth Exchange,  senior scholarships, and one of the most outstanding youth programs in Rotary -- RYLA.  Three very fortunate junior girls were selected to attend Rotary’s RYLA summer leadership camp.  On August 29 Ysabel Chavez, Kate Baca and Olivia Riehle came to Orangevale Rotary’s breakfast meeting to thank the club for the opportunity to attend the 6 day camp and to tell personal stories about this life-changing experience.

Every spring Rotary Clubs in Rotary District 5180 (the greater Sacramento area) and District 5190 (northern California and Nevada) select 1-2 junior students to sponsor to this 6-day camp offered over 3 different weeks in June and July.  This year Orangevale Rotary sponsored and funded 3 campers for the first time!  Grizzly Creek Ranch located near Portola is the perfect setting for this educational and recreational retreat.  The 1400 acre ranch is surrounded by forest, bluffs, streams and meadows.

Kate, Ysabel and Olivia showed a PowerPoint collage of photos as they shared their adventures and emotional experiences interacting with 90 other campers and camp volunteers/counselors during the week. Divided into teams, students soon bonded and learned to work together and support each other in a variety of character building and fun activities.  Certainly the most challenging was the “ropes course” which focuses on leadership, effective communication, trust and cooperation.  Relying on teammates to give them encouragement, everyone eventually conquered their fears and completed the long obstacle course, ziplining, belaying and walking a tightrope 80 feet in the air!!

Not surprising—Orangevale Rotary’s 3 RYLA campers are all serving in a variety of leadship positions as seniors at Casa Roble.  They will soon be giving a RYLA presentation to the Casa Roble Interact Club to share their personal experiences and promote this amazing program.   Kate, Ysabel and Olivia also hope to volunteer as RYLA counselors next summer.  Once a RYLA camper, always a RYLA camper!

Continuing to focus on literacy in the Orangevale community, Orangevale Rotary has launched a children’s book drive for August and September.  Rotary’s goal is to collect at least 500 “gently used” or new children’s books to donate to the Orangevale Food Bank which serves 700+ families each month.  Families with children will receive free books as well as food to nourish both their bodies and the love for reading.

Martin LeNouy Shares His Hometown

On February 8 our French Rotary Youth Exchange student, Martin LeNouy, gave a very interesting Power Point presentation on his life in France. What beautiful photos of his region, Brittany, his home and family, and his small town on the coast. Following the presentation, members asked about his experiences to date in California. Jim Shoemake was pleased to hear that he "loves" Casa Roble and prefers school here. One of Martin's best experiences at Casa Roble this year was playing on the school's water polo team -- and earning a "letter"! We learned that Martin has signed up for the baseball team, although he has never played baseball... Yes, our Martin has a very "can do" personality! Martin's family arrives April 19 to spend 2 weeks touring the West with Martin. Our club will be hosting a welcome party for the LeNouy's on April 20. We all look forward to meeting his parents and sister and thanking them for sharing their son with us this year!

What a pleasure it was to welcome "home" our former exchange student from Finland, Chi Nguyen, a few weeks ago. Chi was our RYE Inbound exchange student 10 years ago. President Ann, a former host mother for Chi, was delighted to receive an email from Chi and to learn she was coming to San Francisco on a business trip January 24 and had 1 free day to come visit Orangevale Rotary. Ann picked up Chi at the San Francisco International Airport and brought her back to Orangevale to a "welcome home" dinner party hosted by Lorie and Russ. After spending the night at the Hively's, Chi attended our Friday morning Rotary meeting and enjoyed talking with her Orangevale Rotary family. Chi's comments to the club on how much Rotary Youth Exchange and Orangevale Rotary had enriched her life were certainly a highlight of the meeting!
