Greeter this week: Vicki Horsfield
(L-R: Colleen Milne, Tessa Bell, Vicki Horsfield)
Having just passed my first year as a Rotarian, I am now even more excited to be involved with Rotary than ever before. Our online Fellowship Assemblies have presented some interesting speakers and topics, and even though I am not on the Board, attending the Board meetings has helped me learn so much about Rotary. The greatest joy is participating in an organization where people share my passion to make positive change in the world and are willing to put their energy into making changes possible.
We often mention that one of the downsides of an E-club is the lack of face-to-face, handshaking contact. But the flip-side of that is how rich and exciting it is when you finally do get to meet in the flesh. I had the joy of having my first "Pod meeting" with Colleen Milne and Tessa Bell in September. We had a wonderful meal together in Victoria, BC, then did a "Walk and Talk" meeting through Butchart Gardens (interspersed with "oohs and ahhs" at all the beauty there.) There was hardly a moment of silence as we exchanged a myriad of experiences and ideas, as well as plans to collaborate on some of those ideas. Our time spent together was not only enriching but I also made two new wonderful friends.

Comments from our Guests and Members
Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

I must say that the thesis of the program was positive and based on reasonable data.  However, the missing factor was any discussion of the impact of unbridled population growth on the ability to impact farming.  Farms can only do so much, given the demands of population.

I was unaware that a book had been written of the first 100 years of the Rotary Foundation. It was most enjoyable to hear some of the stories from the author. Our club has already made plans for the 100 year celebration.

I attended the 50 years of Racism session.  It is a very relevant topic.  I have been speaking to my daughters about the need for love and acceptance.  The fact that this type of behaviour is so prevalent in the US is very sad. We have a duty to instill in our children a love for all.....religion, ethnicity, and gender shouldn't matter.
JP Kamel, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

It's easy to forget how challenging life was 50 years ago for African Americans, how long it took for civil rights to become part of our world.  We need to protect the freedoms we enjoy and not take them for granted.

News From the E-Club Family
We are very proud of our Vicki, who is always on the go; Most of the time she is in Guatemala inspiring children and providing tools for their education. This fall however, she traveled to the northern Continent telling Rotary Clubs about her work and the Rotary E-club.
In September Vicki was on Vancouver Island and spoke at the Rotary Club of Nanaimo Daybreak and continued to Bellevue, Washington to address the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club.
Next was Grants Pass, Oregon for a speaking engagement at the Rogue Gateway Club, followed by the San Francisco West Rotary Club and Valley of the Moon Rotary Club in Santa Rosa, CA where Vicki grew up.
Prior to her West Coast trip, Vicki was in Montreal, and spoke to the Montreal-Lakeshore Rotary Club, which resulted in an invitation from one of the members to speak at their Rotary District 7040 International Committee Meeting in Cornwall, Ontario.
"It was awesome for me to meet so many interesting Rotarians and learn about their involvement and service. One member suggested we should tackle the world's lack of education for those living in poverty, like Rotary tackled Polio. My response was that Rotarians are the ones to get that accomplished because they have the heart; they know how to organize themselves. They also know how to get the funds, and know how to get those funds to where they are really needed!!"
We will likely hear more from Vicki and the hard work she has put into this project.

December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month

Rotary's top priority is the eradication of polio, but our members take on far greater responsibilities to fight disease. They set up health camps and training facilities in undeveloped countries and in communities struggling with HIV/AIDS and malaria. They also design and build the infrastructure for doctors, nurses, governments, and partners to reach the one in six people in the world who can't afford to pay for health care.

"A couple of weeks ago, I heard the love of my life had died following lung replacement surgery and waiting on a second lung.
We had not been in touch intentionally as life is not always simple. He was initially a refugee here in Canada and changed my life.
We worked together in resettlement of others for years, sang together to guitar and piano, lost a child, and made music travelling many countries together until life took us in opposite directions.
He learned English and got his law degree and taught international law at several universities and did work for Central American governments and applied to be a judge.
One cannot always judge a book by its cover.
I'd like to dedicate this song to him with profound gratitude for our life changing love and to his family whom he leaves behind."
