Past President Brian called the meeting to order since President Judy was absent. There were 15 members in attendance and 2 guests, Ely and Romero who look after our email club.
Brian introduced Ely Contreras – Vermeulen as our guest speaker for the meeting.
Ely told us about a book called “Children of Sanchez” which focused on the plight of a father of seven who due to the deplorable conditions had no choice but to work in the fields harvesting “White Gold” sugar cane. They average $15 per day, there are over 2.5 million people working these crops every day.
Alcohol, drug, spousal and child abuse are prevalent in their country. What is their FUTURE?
“Project Amigo” is a project that gives these children HOPE through education and medical supplies that help to change their lives. In order for the children to attend school they need to learn Spanish and attain an 8.5 grade point average out of 10 every year to stay in school.
Project Amigo was founded 30 years ago and volunteers are their life line. There are two weeks in 2016 that are Rotary Service Weeks. Jan. 24 -31/16, Cater a Humanitarian Work Week to the skills, talents and interests of your Rotary Club. Feb. 14 – 21/16, Cater a Humanitarian Work Week to the skills, talents and interests of your Rotary Club.

The club voted to turn over the proceeds of our 50/50 to the trust fund we set up at Interior Savings and Credit Union for Deb Peach who was the Burnt Out victim of the Sunshine Cove condos on May 1. Deb was the only victim that was left destitute and with no insurance. Unfortunately her husband died of Cancer at Christmas time. They exhausted their savings trying to find alternative ways to fight this terrible disease to go into remission and then have it come back. Ron won the 50/50 and donated it to the trust fund and so did Bill. Donations were received from Karen H and Pam C at the same time. I checked the bank when I made the deposit on Thur. May7, and there was close to $500.

If you have donations for the Golf Tournament please contact Brian. All members please contact the people you have previously gotten donations from since you have the repor. Make sure Brian knows so we don’t duplicate the contact.

Remember Fri. May 22, at Marieze’s for a social and induction of our new members. Let Judy know if you are coming.
Please let Jim King know if you are planning on going to Kelowna on June 19, coming back June 21 for the Rotary District Conference. He has made arrangements to have a bus to drive us if there is enough people going and if there is not enough we can offer a ride to Oliver.
