Central Point Rotary teamed up with the Crater Foundation to supply every kindergarten student in the Central Point School district with a bag of supplies.  Volunteers met on August 6th to organize crayons, glue sticks, pencils and other necessary supplies into  nearly 400 gallon sized zip lock bags, led by Central Point Rotarian, Candy Manary.

Those supplies were then distributed to Central Point Elementary, Jewett Elementary, Mae Richardson Elementary, Patrick Elementary and Sams Valley Elementary.

"It means a lot to our most needy students to begin the year with all the supplies they need," said Jewett Principal, Tom Rambo.

ImageThe Central Point Rotary is proudly honoring international “Talk Like a Pirate Day” on Wednesday, September 19th.  This meeting is all of the fun of the typical Central Point Rotary, but with salty talk, grog and costumes.  To those of you who are familiar with our Rotary Club, “salty talk” and “costume” may not seem atypical.  And, you may have even questioned whether or not certain members had already been into the “grog.”

However, September 19th takes this to a whole new level—we’re devoting the entire meeting to pirate-y adventure.  Watch our Cap’n (President Tom) welcome guests and Rotarians aboard as they walk the gangway.  Witness the Master-At-Arms force wenches, Jim-Lads and Salty Sea Dogs to walk the plank or give up their pieces of eight.

All area Rotarians are welcome and encouraged to join the fun.

Candy Manary led a team of Central Point Rotarians in purchasing, organizing and handing out over $10,000 in school supplies to Central Point school children.  The school supply support took place on August 16-18 and met the needs of 563 children.  Manary noted that the need for supplies has increased significantly.   In 2010, Rotarians served 391 and in 2009, 213 students were served.  In addition to the support from Central Point Rotary, several other businesses and organizations contributed, including:  Cow Creek Foundation, West Family Foundation, New Car Owners Association, Premier West Bank, State Farm Insurance, and the Crater Foundation.

Judd Larson, DDS plans to send care packages to our overseas troops--filled with Halloween candy.  As a local dentist, Larson is committed to protecting children from cavities and is willing to demonstrate that commitment by paying a $1 per pound to children willing to give up Halloween treats.  For Rotarians, the candy will be a donation to the project.  Either way, our overseas troops will benefit from a sweet treat that will remind them of home.

Please bring any left-over Halloween candy to Rotary on Wednesday, November 7th.

Central Point Rotarians took 25 Central Point, Gold Hill and Sams Valley kids on a pre-Christmas Shopping Spree to purchase clothes, shoes, pajamas, socks, under ware and warm coats.  Students with the most significant needs were selected by District 6 principals, then paired with a Rotarian to purchase much needed items.   Partners in the shopping spree included RVTD (provided bus transportation from Jewett Elementary to Medford and back), JC Penney (provided haircuts and styles, discount coupons and stockings with gifts for each child, and doughnuts and juice to fuel the shopping), Red Robin (provided a kids' meal for each child) and the Central Point Rotary (provided $150 for each child to make purchases and some amazing entertainment from the Balloon Man).

Central Point Rotarians, student volunteers from Crater and a number of helpful principals used their shopping savvy and the incredible discounts at JC Penney nearly double their purchasing power.  Kids got to choose their favorite warm coats, pick out boots or shoes, or find the perfect party dress.   Candy Manary, who organizes the shopping spree every November, reported that some shoppers got nearly $400 worth of merchandise for their $150 investment.

"Thank you for the sweater," one student wrote in a thank you note, "I wear it every day."
