Richard Seale – FILM MAKER AND STORY TELLER: FRONT PORCH FILMS

Richard taught film production at Curtin University for 8 years before deciding to leave the world of university politics behind and start his own business.
Richard believes everyone has a fascinating story waiting to be told.  The example he showed us was a 91-year-old woman, a member of the “Silent Generation”, born between 1930 and 1945.  Those people who came here, arrived by ship and for various reasons including cost, never expected they would ever go back. So they HAD to start a new life.
Richard worked hard to set the scene for her story, shooting suburban backgrounds, accessing film from various library sources, etc.
Film is now very accessible, affordable, condenses time, and engages multiple senses.
Richard’s “Golden Rules” for telling a story on film are:
  • Don’t try and include everything
  • It will take you on a journey
  • All stories need a point (and a villain!)
  • You are engaged, and you can celebrate.
There was a great deal of interest in what Richard had to say, and one suggestion was to record the history of the Jacaranda Festival.
