President Ian sadly announced that Joe Devereux passed away peacefully on March 28, 2019, aged 93 years. He had been a member of Hawthorn Rotary Club since1990, a Paul Harris Fellow, and always contributed to the club with good humour and wit.

As President of the Lawn Tennis Assosciation of Victoria 1984-89 he worked hard to have Melbourne accepted as a major tennis venue. He was a driving force in the creation of the annual Kooyong Classic and partly as a result of his efforts, the Australian Open Tennis Tournament in Melbourne is one of the four “Grand Slam” tournaments in the world. He was also President of Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club 1989-90.

We will always have him in our hearts, and smiling at us from his portrait in The President’s Room at Kooyong.
Joe certainly knew how to win our hearts: our photo shows him with District Governor Julie Mason in happier days. We pass our condolonces to Marie and her family.
