Is there still such a creature as a ‘Typical Rotarian’?

If there is, then Delphine Genin is definitely not such a creature – as we learned from her Member Behind the Badge address to the Club.

We are definitely privileged to have as a Member this French woman who

  •    is totally fluent in English, but with a delightful touch of a French accent;
  •    studied sociology and psychology in France before changing to economics, finance and business strategy;
  •    always had burning ambitions to rapidly secure senior positions in business, and to start her own business enterprise;
  •    went to study in London in order to broaden her knowledge even further, and to become fluent in English;
  •    returned to France, and achieved Chief Finance Officer status in lightening quick time, despite the (inevitable?) anti-feminine bias of French business;
  •    threatened to resign, and thereby achieved equal pay with her male counterparts;
  •    came to Australia in the expectation that our attitudes to gender would be more progressive than those in France;
  •   still burns with ambition, including for progress on gender equality issues;
  •   started her own high couture business in Australia ( https://delphinegenin.com  - slogan: Honour yourself and influence the world with a piece of Art)

Delphine left us splendidly unclear about

  •    dates (she has packed so much into her life that she should be at least 60, but she must be closer to half of that);     her husband (how does he keep up with her ambition?);
  •    how her business operates (Where are the clothes actually made?  Where can we see them? How does she sell them? Etc)

Clearly Delphine joined Rotary Hawthorn with her eyes wide open.  She surely wants to be active in Rotary.  We must surely all work hard to respond to her ideas for Rotary, and provide the support that she will need to achieve her ambitions in our midst.

Delphine:

  •    I apologise for the details that I’ve got wrong in this brief summary.
  •    We are thrilled to have you as a Member of Rotary Hawthorn.  Please don’t hesitate to stir us up!
