Today is International Women’s Day, a time to reflect on how far we have come – and how far we have to go – to create a world in which all people are free from discrimination, oppression and violence.

Pam Crockett reports elsewhere on our Women’s Day Breakfast, where we also recognised some male faces: David Pisterman and John Pesutto (Senior Fellow, Melbourne School of Government) while Kim D’Arcy looks on. I suspect Noel Halford and Ian Macfarlane are comparing golf scores.

Isn’t it nice to support The Rotary Foundation?

For more than 100 years, The Rotary Foundation has made a difference in the lives of millions around the world. Not only does it help end polio and improve communities through a range of diverse projects, Charity Navigator has awarded the Foundation Four Stars (its highest rating) for fourteen years!

And Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair John Germ sends their supporters a lovely birthday card.  ;-)

But seriously, have a look at the website to see some of the active programmes: I’m sure you can find something worth supporting.

Katrina Flinn requests members to donate reading glasses and  herbal teas for Box Hill Hospital’s Mental Health Unit patients.

“We are in urgent need of reading glasses to support the patients at Box Hill hospitals mental health units.

Have you any spare that you can donate?

Alternatively, you may wish to purchase some packs of herbal teas when you are next at the supermarket for the patients.

Please bring them to the next Rotary meeting.

Provision of Items such as these are an extra service to our care pack project. This small donation will make a big difference to the patients that often come in the hospital’s mental health units with very little to no personal items and in a distressed and vulnerable  state.”

Can you assist?

What a lovely afternoon we had at the President’s Party!

Our hosts, President Andrew and Pam, made us feel so welcome in their gorgeous home. Old and new friends mixed and chatted as refreshments were passed around: did we realise how much we have missed each other over the past year?

We relaxed, chatted, swopped lies, and solved all the world’s problems in one single afternoon. (Well, not quite all)

Thanks Pam and Andrew, for your charming hospitality.

Back to Kooyong again next week, when we will be honouring our long-standing member, David Corrigan.

Chairman of the Day Dennis Shore will introduce David, who served on the Club’s Board for several years, as Secretary and as Club President in 1982/83.

As David will be there, it’s sure to be fun.
