Retired businessman Dennis Van Someren is an advocate and volunteer worker for the charity Shine for Kids which assists some of the 60,000 Australian children who have a parent in prison. Dennis accompanies children on visits to their incarcerated parents. Why does he do it? Because he sees in them the child he was in the 1960s with his accountant father being sent to prison for embezzlement. Then, with an absent father and a stressed-out mother, he faced loss of social status, bullying and poverty. Dennis’ story is in a compelling radio interview with Richard Fidler at www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/conversations-dennis-van-someren/9402846. He will take us into the middle of a huge social problem and tell us how he thinks we might help.
