The book tells the story of Maurice O'Keefe, a young lawyer, of an Irish Catholic family, home from army service in World War I, having been elected as the County Attorney in 1921, and when informed of corruption among the county officials, take them to task, and removes them from office,  convenes a Grand Jury and files criminal actions against the officials, sending the County Treasurer to Prison.  Following which, his enemies get revenge by luring him into trap to cause his removal as County Attorney; thereafter, how he becomes one of the most successful lawyers in northeastern Kansas; marrying the girl of a wealthy family, who was a playmate of Amelia Earhart; raising three sons and two daughters, the sons becoming attorneys. Other factors in the story, is the building of the first concrete highway in Kansas, the enforcement of Prohibition, and the era of the Ku Klux Klan.

      PERSONAL HISTORY OF ROBERT D. CAPLINGER

          Born February 23, 1927, at Stafford, Kansas.  Attended grade and high school at Greensburg, Kansas.  Graduated in May 1945 and went on active duty with the Army Air Corps, June 1945 thru November 1, 1946.  Attended George Washington University, Washington, D.C. and Washburn University.  Received BA from Washburn in 1950 and JD in 1952.

          Married Helen Stutz, Effingham, Kansas on August 28, 1949.  They have two Children: Stephen William born December 9, 1952 and Candra Janelle born February 20, 1957.  Both graduated from Atchison County Community High School and Kansas State University.
