Bulletin Editor
Paul Murray
At today’s meeting I encouraged members to take a few moments silence to reflect on matters of importance as an alternative to singing the traditional rotary grace.  This was in response to not only comments from members in our recent survey but also after reading a short comment on this matter written by  Past District Governor David Kennedy.  (I have included this article, Invocations at Club Meetings,  in the Bulletin for your own reading).

And our Loyal Toast was somewhat different intentionally to spark a conversation as to “What should our Toast look like?”  Please Google both Loyal Toasts and Rotary Toasts and I look forward to comments next week.

I have booked one Fellowship day each month and a Club Assembly every second month – to discuss pertinent Club Matters.  On top of that we are looking to hold four Vocational visits over the next 12 months.
We start our Rotary year with 68 members having received the resignations of Greg Goldspink and Jon Daley in the week leading up to the Changeover.  Membership is one issue I would like to discuss next week.

Franzi leaves us next week after a short 12 months.  As PP John Ferguson said at our Changeover she has been a fantastic ambassador for her country, Germany and is a credit to her family.  We shall miss her and wish her well as she ‘attempts’ to return to normal activities!  Franzi boards a plane next Monday 13th at 1.25pm so please travel out to farewell her at the Wagga airport if you have time.
Our new exchange student Katarina Janzon arrives from Sweden in the next few weeks and will be hosted by David and Cathy Pyke.

We will be asking members, both old and new, to present a short (3 minute) profile over the next 12 months.  Laurie will tap you on the shoulder for this one.

And our Sergeant’s roster will rotate from week to week as per furniture, reception and fellowship.  Please look out for your turn and if you are going to be absent please swap with another member.  Treasurer David Pyke is already lamenting the fact that we are under budget after just the first week!

Our Guest speaker at Tuesdays meeting was Dr Matteo Carlino, recipient of the Gordon Braid Scholarship and the Australian Rotary Health Scholarship.  Dr Carlino was introduced by John Ferguson.

Dr Carlino is a specialist Clinical Oncologist and he spoke of the drastic changes that have taken place over the last five years in Melanoma research.  He told us of his first experiences with recording the reactions of patients to a new experimental drug.  Well into 50 to 60 percent of the patients showed improvements.  With many of the patients it was short lived but in limited numbers the improvement was ongoing.  His challenge was to determine why the drugs stopped working, and that was when the the Gordon Braid Scholarship and the Australian Rotary Health Scgholarship began to support the research.

He said he had a unique group of engaged patients.  They were committed to the research and would report judiciously when a new lump would appear and ask, 'what do you want to do with it',  not feeling sorry for themselves, but wanting to make a contribution.   He took their lumps and grew them in laboratory dishes.  Working with the patients and at the same time growing their lumps in the laboratory, gave him a great insight into what was happening when the drug was working and what was happening when it stopped working.  This allowed him to administer additional drugs and monitor the effect.  The resulting research has brought the drug from only available in two hospitals in 2010 to today being on the government funded prescriptions list (PBS) and extended the patient beneficial working time from 6 to 9 months.

They are now at the stage where they can take patients cancer samples and grow them in the laboratory and test which combination of drugs works best.   He regularly visits the patients in the clinic and then goes back to the laboratory and looks through a microscope at their cancers.  Their cancers have different personalities, some grow fast, some grow slow.  He said that these 10 or 12 individual patients, have done more for melanoma research than they could have ever imagined.

Of all the people who get incurable cancer, one in five hundred simply get well.  For some reason there bodies immune system defeats it.  Consequently, Matt is now involved in research on how to manipulate peoples immune system to control cancers.  This research has contributed to the release of a new drug onto the PBS referred to as the Ron Walker drug.  Ron Walker was the first patient to take this combination of tablets and immune drugs, and his cancer has been under control for three years.

Dr Carlino took several questions and was given a vote of thanks by Mark Hillis.

Finish Todays report : Rotary Information supplied by Ken Cook

In many Rotary clubs, it is customary to open weekly meetings with an appropriate invocation or blessing. Usually such invocations are offered without reference to specific religious denominations or faiths.

Rotary policy recognizes that throughout the world Rotarians represent many religious beliefs, ideas and creeds. The religious beliefs of each member are fully respected, and nothing in Rotary is intended to prevent each individual from being faithful to such convictions.

At international assemblies and conventions, it is traditional for a silent invocation to be given. In respect for all religious beliefs and in the spirit of tolerance for a wide variety of personal faiths, all persons are invited to seek divine guidance and peace "each in his own way." It is an inspiring experience to join with thousands of Rotarians in an international "silent prayer" or act of personal devotion.

Usually all Rotary International board and committee meetings begin with a few moments of silent meditation. In this period of silence, Rotary demonstrates respect for the beliefs of all members, who represent the religions of the world.

Since each Rotary club is autonomous, the practice of presenting a prayer or invocation at club meetings is left entirely to the traditions and customs of the individual club, with the understanding that these meeting rituals always be conducted in a manner that will respect the religious convictions and faiths of all members.

Having said that most will also know my attitude towards maintaining the secular aspect of our wonderful organisation and I find the practice by the RI leadership of using a few moments silent meditation as quite forward thinking and something that all Clubs could think about using.

Tuesdays meeting was the first of the new Rotary year.  It was undoubtedly the biggest meeting in a long time with all tables filled and members bringing in extra tables for the overflow.  It was a good start to the new year.

Laurie Blowes read  the following Rotary Information provided by Ken Cook.
The Rotary Foundation was started by Arch Klump in 1917.  The first donation was $500 to the international Society of Crippled Children.  Today the Foundations has made over one billion dollars in donations since 1917.  Laurie then encouraged members to become a centurion by donating $100 a year to the Foundation.

Laurie was also asked to be the initial candidate for the new Member Profile Updates

He  started his talk with the date March 13, 2008.  That was the date Laurie Joined Wollundry Rotary.  He suggested prior to that date he spoke very little in public.  Now he thinks most members would prefer he shut up.  He has received a Paul Harris Fellow and was the 2013 Wagga Wagga Citizen of the Year.  They are his most valued awards.  He is currently working on forming a Motor neuron disease support group.  Still the mayor of North Wagga, he has worked continuously with volunteers to upgrade and renovate the North Wagga public areas.  He said he is proud to be a member of Wollundry Rotary.

Attending Tuesdays meeting were members of the The Amie St Clair Melanoma Trust.  From the left, Peter St Clair, Dr Timothy Caton, Dr Matteo Carlino,  Eileen Friedlieb and Annette St Clair.

Sheila Jensen was at our meeting as guests of Peter Crozier.  Sheila was a 1984/85 exchange student who came from Denmark to Wollundry Wagga.   Sheila is now Sheila Truelsen and her family includes husband Claus and children Elizabeth, Christian and Simon.  Members  welcomed the entire family and especially Sheila on the 30th anniversary of her exchange.

Peter and Gail Crozier hosted an evening get together with 1984/85 exchange student  Sheila Jensen and her family.  Wollundry Rotarians John and Maria Egan, John and Norma Gray, David and Brenda Byfield and Graham Burmiester  were members 30 years ago and were part of the welcome.

Franzie attended her last meeting with Wollundry Rotary.  She flys out of Wagga on Monday July 13th at 1:25.

President Geoff invited members to stop out to the airport next Monday to farewell Franzie.  He also noted that instead of the traditional Acubra hat that had been given to many students, the gift this year was a beautiful silver ring.  Franzie held her hand up to show everyone her gift, however few were able to get a good look, so Franzie fashionably modeled her ring for us (see hand and ring photo above).

Franzie was suffering from a bad cold but she still managed to go up to the rostrum and say goodbye.  She said she 'will miss everyone' and she 'had a great time' and she 'loves the ring'.   She promised to return for a visit, and ensured it would be in less than 30 years (see earlier exchange student story above).

Guests at Tuesdays meeting were Marge Nash and Ellen Brasier with Andy Irvine in the middle.

Visitor 6 (Peter St Clair) won the lucky door prize.
