Val T. Iwashita has worked for 40 years as an educator in Hawaii, almost all of which in independent schools. He now serves as a consultant and a Lecturer at the University of Hawaii, Manoa

Trained as a teacher and counselor, he spent 20 years at Mid-Pacific Institute, the last 12 as Vice President and Principal. Duties included budgeting, strategic planning and assisting with faculty recruitment and training, admissions, campus development, alumni relations and fund raising. He was responsible for the day to day operations of the school.

Dr. Iwashita was the Headmaster of Iolani School for 17 years, retiring in June, 2012. He had oversight responsibility for all facets of school operation and development. During his tenure, the school invested over 60 million dollars in campus infrastructure and buildings and purchased 5 acres of land adjacent to the campus, now under development.

Shortly after retirement, he taught at the Shidler College of Business and the College of Education at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. He has taught BUS 315, Global Management and Organizational Behavior, BUS 345, Strategic Management, KRS 623, Administration in Kinesiology, EDEF 408, Community and Culture: Social and Cultural Contexts of Education and EDEF 667B, Private School Finance and Human Relations.

His community work has involved numerous School Accreditation Chairmanships, President of the National Association of Independent Schools Board of Trustees, President of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, and various other leadership positions in the private and public organizations.

His primary academic interests include leadership and management, economic and cultural issues, environmental concerns, futures and education.
